Weather: Clear skies all week!

Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.



Possible Objectives

1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!

[ Joonghyuk has been acclimating pretty quickly to island life only because there are so many things they would need to do to make living here sustainable. First, it would be wood, so he can be found chopping some trees without his shirt nearby and collecting more apples on top of any wood that conveniently pops out of the trees. If a log boinks your head... oops. If it's a wasp nest. Oops???

What to do with these apples? Well, he candies them. Refining some twigs clean, he uses them like a skewer. Get your own candied apple, more like he'll give them to anyone passing by since he wants them gone. Anyone is free to give him ingredients and he'll make a random dish with it. No, you cannot request a dish.

After he's done with cooking, he can be found organizing seeds for gardening. If you're nearby, he'll ask if you have any vegetables you aren't going to use. ]

[Serval takes one of the sticks and sniffs at the apple curiously.]

[ Oh, it's Serval again. Maybe she would like it? Most like sweets unlike him. ]

Yes, though more of a treat. Don't eat more than one.

Amazing! That one's really nice. I wonder if they could put these into Japari Buns? That's all we eat at home, but they have loads of different kinds.

[ Serval comes from such a strange world? Granted, so did he. ]

[ God, he could use a murim dumpling right now. ]

[ Dokja has rolled up his own sleeves, wiping his forehead with the back of his arm. Ugh.. this is a lot of work. Doesn't help his stamina is a lot less than what he's used to. Meanwhile, Joonghyuk hasn't stopped and kept going.

He glances over and rubs at his neck as he watches him. Just, staring, staring then he stills. Wait. Where.. Why is he shirtless? ???? ]

Yoo Joonghyuk! You realize that there are kids around here? [ PUT ON A SHIRT? He's making his way over to- shake him? Throw his abandoned shirt at him? None of that happens given a log drops right on his head as soon as he approaches him at a tree and now he's crouched on the ground holding his head. His tail is curled in between his legs, ears folded back at the ache. ] S-son of a bi..

[ Yes, he's shirtless, and sure there are kids... But he doesn't see anything wrong? There's nothing at all lewd about a man's chest???

He stops his chopping when he hears the footsteps stop by the tree, peeking over with twitching ears. ]

Did you run into the tree?

[ When it's Yoo Joonghyuk's chest it is offensive. Yes, that makes sense. Anyways, he doesn't care to answer, eyes just a bit teary as he stares at the log that plopped unceremoniously from the tree.

Then he tilts his head up, frowning at him. ] No, don't you see the mess you're making??

[ It's not super bad, just a bunch of logs scattered about but he's complaining anyways. Once he recovers from the dull ache does he raise a hand to throw Joonghyuk's shirt at his face. ] Put it on.

It's more efficient to organize after.

[ Considering all the logs fall into a certain place, opposite from him with the flimsy axe. One hand releases the axe and catches the shirt. ]

No. It's hot.

[ He has worked a sweat! And doesn't want to dirty his red plaid shirt! ]

[ Laurent is just passing by, since he's done with fishing. You'd think he would give Joonghyuk a fish, but no. ]

Hello, can you cook grasshoppers?

[ Yeah. ]

[ ... He doesn't even say something to that because grasshoppers are pretty good. Extending an open hands, he waits to be given the bugs.

If this is a joke, he'll remember you for being a Coward. ]

[ A quiet one, aren't you... Laurent hands Joonghyuk a watering can. It's full of grasshoppers instead of water. ]

So you can actually cook them?

Anything can be cooked.

[ Whether it's edible or not depends? He preps the grasshoppers by pulling off their heads and plucking off their legs and wings. After, he cleans them and coats them in some makeshift batter using the eggs, milk, and seasoning.

Into the pan they go, sizzle sizzle sizzle.

And you have some quickly panfried grasshoppers. ]

Not seeds, but I did save the tops from the carrots I used earlier. Are you planning on starting a garden, then?

We need to prepare for the worst.

[ So like, if planes never come back... Otherwise, he's just looking for stuff to do. Living off of just fish and apples is too sad. If they can have variety, then Joonghyuk will viciously take it. ]

I'll take the carrot tops.

[ Hm... Usually, he'd prefer to work on his own, but some help would make it a lot easier. ]

We need to have a garden to begin with. Prepping the land comes first.

[ Minato comes by with a bucket full of miscellaneous flowers, plants, and bugs, all still alive and squirming around and enjoying their last few hours in this tiny little garden before their fate of being dumped inside Tom Nook's tent- assuming that's how this works. ]

Hi... Can you tell if any of these are poisonous?

It'd be safer to stick to bugs and flora you know are edible. [ Mmmm. He looks over Minato's loot and recognizes some of it. Why— ] The yellow flowers are fine.

[ Looking back up, he stares at Minato. They have eggs... Fish. And other things, so... ]

What are you planning?

That's why I came to you, to see if they're edible...

[ He picks up a yellow flower and chews on the stem- sour, and slightly astringent. It makes him a little hungry and a little thirsty, the opposite of what he wants from food. ]

I'm not really planning anything, though. A varied diet is important, or something, right? It's just that.

[ HE MEANT IT AS EVEN HE DOESN'T KNOW EVERYTHING? But now he guesses Minato Doesn't Know Anything. God. ]

... These weeds, these bugs. [ He sifts them out. ] Cooked.

[ Sure, maybe some raw would be okay, but parasites. ]

There are plenty of people cooking. You don't need to eat flowers.

[ So. Uhm. Why? Why are you eating it? ]

[Hey, Joonghyuk, hope you don't mind one of your roommates passing by!! Faris is practically useless here, but he has been gathering things, and that's clearly what he's going to continue doing when Joonghyuk offers him an apple.]

Oh, thank you— Ah, this one is different! What is it?

[...he's not exactly familiar with candied apples, but he takes it curiously anyway!!]

[ Gathering is one notch up from useless!! So he won't be getting any quips from Joonghyuk when they're in their tent or out. ]

It's an apple coated in a sugar glaze. [ Go ahead. Take a bite and enjoy or be appalled by how sweet it is. ] Don't eat more than one.

[ Does that sound ominous when you don't know much about the snack? ]

[Well now he's just looking at it Suspiciously, like it sounds great! But clearly there is something more to it...... Is the glaze made of poison???]

Too much sugar is not good for your teeth.

[ Hm... Closing his eyes, he reconsiders what he says. ]

Don't eat sweets too often, in general.

[ Yeah, that's better. Sugar is the enemy. ]
