WEEK 1 LOG ♬
Weather: Clear skies all week!

Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.

Possible Objectives

1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

[ Oh, there's batter. They say anything that's fried is bound to have some decent flavor, whether it's healthy or not. Laurent doesn't eat them just yet, since they're very fresh and likely to be very, very hot. ]

Why don't you eat one too?

[ Without flour, it isn't a really thick batter, but it is crispy. An added crunchiness to the already crunchy grasshoppers. Anyway, they are hot! But they also cool down fast since they're small.

He quirks an eyebrow. ]

I'm not hungry.

[ And he isn't going to just take. Unless.

Well.

Unless he really wants it, then he takes without asking. ]

[ It's not like there's just one fried grasshopper, so it's fine. Once he feels that they cooled down, Laurent filches one from the plate and eats. Hm. It's actually... not that bad. But, of course, this is coming from a person who used to eat spaghetti as if it was their lifeblood... it's quite something. ]

Dokja said you made some candied apples and apple omelettes. Could I have one?

[ i could use some spaghetti... Joonghyuk did make those, but the candied apples are gone and he only made apple omelettes for very few. Maybe only once. And maybe only for himself. ]

You can't merely request things. [ Squinting. ] This isn't a cafeteria.

[ He just needs some more needling. They do have too many apples. ]

[ To that, Laurent gets out 500 bells. ]

I'm not requesting.

[ His scrutinizing look doesn't disappear, but... Joonghyuk takes the bells. ]

You wanted both.

[ Clarifying right now. ]

Yes, both. Please woo me with your cooking.

[ No, but. Yeah. ]

Don't talk like that.

[ But he'll fix up both at the same time. The omelette comes faster than the candied apple, considering the sugar, but here you go. They both smell sweet! Go get some cavities. ]

[ Sorry, but you're fun to tease, Joonghyuk... Laurent likes food on the sweeter side, so the smell is absolutely amazing to him. ]

How much would it cost for you to cook a buffet for us?

[ He's already considering it for the future. ]

[ Hm... While he doesn't like being relied on to that extent, it's not like he needs to be paid to help. He'll do it when he wants.

However, since Laurent is offering— ]

The rights to your life and death.

Sorry, not even I own the rights to that.

[ He says it so flippantly that it might be hard to discern whether he's serious or not. Either way, he takes a bite out of the omelet. It's reeeeal good. God. He wants to hire Joonghyuk as his personal chef for himself and his tentmates, but he knows that's nigh impossible. ]

Go a little higher?

[ Not lower--higher. ]

[ There's something unsettling about that... Considering Joonghyuk has died and lived many lives—death, failure, life, success all mean something to him still. He wouldn't casually throw his life just because he can relive it.

At least not anymore. His eyebrows arch. ]

Is there something that means anything to you?

[ Do you even have something like that? ]

Of course there is.

[ But he'll leave it at that if that's all Joonghyuk wanted to know. He takes another bite of the omelet and looks really satisfied with his food. ]

[ He stares at him and it almost seems like he... Doesn't blink. At all, but he does and cleans the cooking utensils Nook provided for them. ]

I'll take an IOU.

Great.

[ Not that great. Laurent doesn't like not knowing what he owes and he's well aware it can fuck him up later, but it's fine. It'll be fine... maybe. ]

I'll let you know later when I decide on the date.

[ It'll probably be Friday. Handwave that.

Laurent finishes up the omelet and decides to take the candied apple to go. ]

Thanks for the food. It was delicious.

[ Laurent... Even he knows that it was a bad move to take it, even if they're living normal lives on the island. He won't say anything, though. ]

It's nothing complex. You can make it yourself if you wanted to learn.

[ Limited ingredients and tools means easy. ]

I could.

[ But will he? He's not really thinking about it. ]
