The Move-In

You’ve spent the week adjusting to island life by getting to know one another, figuring out what to do with all those presents, gathering your resources and selling them off to Tom Nook. The weekend is finally here, though, and that’s something to celebrate!

...But when you wake up on Saturday, whenever that may be, the environment you’re in is not the tent you remember falling asleep in. Rather, you’re inside of some kind of house with a white wall and ceiling, wood lined across the bottom of the walls. The floor is wood, too, shiny and glossy as the sun rays shine through the one window in your house. Whatever you had lying out in your tents is still arranged in the same general order you had your things in before. Furthermore, you’re still lying on your camping cots with the same people who fell asleep in the tent with you, but if you decide to get up and investigate, you’ll find two other rooms other than the one you’re in.

Facing the door from the inside, if you look to your left, you’ll find...a bathroom! It’s got a basic toilet, sink, and a bathtub with a showerhead for you to use. There are also enough bath towels for each person hanging on a towel rack. The walls are white but the floor in here is tiled instead of wooden. The room across the bathroom, however, is empty. It has the same wallpaper and flooring as the main room you found yourself in.

It’s a small, comfy place you’re staying in, but the real question is… When did this happen? Only one way to find out.

And sure enough, if you’re awake by nine AM, Tom Nook will rally everyone to Resident Services for his morning announcements.

“Good morning, everyone, and welcome to your first weekend on Isle Sonrisa! As you’ve all probably already noticed by now, we were able to upgrade your tents last night into houses! Don’t worry, there is no fee for this upgrade -- but now you finally have a place where you can decorate your house with all the furniture you were able to get in the mail. For any excess items you may have… Might I suggest a yard sard of some sort, hm?”

He tilts his head a little. He thinks this is a good idea!

“Alternatively, houses all come with storage. There’s a small little storage shed in the back of everyone’s houses that can fit many, many items. If you don’t want to sell your items to me or hand them off to someone else, you can store them inside of there.”

Tom Nook nods his head. “Yes, yes. I’d like to suggest that you all take this weekend to decide how to arrange the items you’ve gotten in the mail...and one more thing about those items: You can put them outside, too. For example, oh, an exercise area might be nice…” He sounds a little wistful when he says it, but promptly shakes his head afterwards.

“Ah-! Before I forget...erm… It seems as though one of our friends has unexpectedly left the island. We don’t know where or how he left, you see...but Heimdall is no longer here. We’re still working on figuring out a way to send you all home, and we’re trying to track him down, too.”

He looks very guilty about that, at least. But the moment passes, and he perks up again, smiling at everyone as best as he can. “Alright, that’s it! You can spend the weekend however you’d like to, but with your new homes being built and all the furniture some of you have received, well… It may be a good idea to work on that, no?”

[ That gets a small chuckle from Laurent. What is this sass--though it's not unwelcome. He finds it very amusing. ]

Right. Want to try moving to the center? I'll move with you.

[ He would have made his way to the center before Laurent showed up if keeping the plane balanced was of dire importance, but as long as it didn't capsize with him on a wing, he didn't much feel the need to move.

Even now, his wings shift uneasily --he's getting better at keeping track of all of them and feeling like they're part of him, but it still doesn't come as naturally as he'd like. ]

...No. Can you stay on that side? I... could use help with something, and it would work better if you stay over there.

And what would that be?

[ It would be pretty unwise to just do his own thing without telling Minato in order to keep the balance, so. Communication is important. ]

I'm looking for blood.

[ Eyes on either end of the plane covers more ground. ]

[ Oh.

Why blood in particular?

Bodies sink, but blood tends to spread out in the water...? Easier to spot.

[ Blood is the first step, bodies second. ]

Is this about the missing person and you think his body is in the bottom of the ocean? I imagine the blood must have thinned out by now.

[ He shrugs, which is a maybe but also yes. Heimdall being missing concerns him enough to want to look into it himself instead of leaving it all up to Tom Nook and associates. It doesn't really feel right lounging around at the beach knowing somebody's dead body could be under the sea. ]

Could've drowned and torn to shreds bit by bit. Maybe he didn't lose all his blood immediately. If there's a slim possibility, it's worth chasing, isn't it?

... I suppose.

[ He won't shoot down Minato's suggestion, but Laurent personally thinks that if he was torn to shreds, the blood would have been on land, like the beach and easily covered with sand. Maybe he was killed in the river with the water flowing fast enough out of the island within an hour. A day has already passed, so with the possibility of the guy being out there virtually anywhere, Laurent wonders... ]

It's certainly one way to search for him. This method is very like you.

A futile shot in the dark?

[ He knows.

On land, by the river, Minato would have no excuse not to have noticed something- before or after or during- he would have heard or seen something about what happened. A person out swimming at sea, though, the excuse comes much easier with the sheer depth and vastness of the water. ]

No, I meant searching by doing what you want and not exerting much energy at the same time.

[ Laurent wouldn't be that mean to Minato..... ]

[ People could stand to be meaner to Minato, who would rather hear harsh truths than be coddled- taken care of. It's okay! He is good at being mean to himself. ]

It's the only way to do it. I'd go diving to search for him, but I dunno if I'd be able to make it back up after, anyways.

It's too bad the Residential Services wouldn't have rope.

[ As everyone has found out... first day. Thanks, You Jail Him. ]

And I don't think my flimsy fishing rod would help either.

I have some string. If it's doubled up or braided, it might be strong enough to act as a lifeline.

[ This is a terrible idea. It could work. Minato reaches for his knapsack and takes out the clothesline provided with the camping supplies and presents it to Laurent. ]

[ Laurent takes it and immediately starts braiding it, despite knowing Minato's weight very generally since he managed to pick him up before. He'll make sure this thing is so tight that it won't snap. He thinks clothesline can be durable, considering some people have blankets tossed over them and it holds. ]

How long can you open your eyes underwater?

[ Speaking of which... the water looks fine. Clear to a certain extent, even. ]

[ Hey............ isn't how long he can hold his breath a more important question ]

Uh. Forever, I guess. It won't be a problem.

[ He had kept his eyes closed when he'd first fallen out of the sky and into the sea, but he figures that stinging eyes can be gotten used to and any eye infections will take hours to set in, so it'll be fine. ]

[ He knows a little more than the basic first aid, so it'll be fine. Maybe. ]

Do you want me to pull you up every thirty seconds?

[ Good thing he was practically braiding stems all day all week by making flower crowns, so the braiding is more or less habitual at this point. ]

[ Great, because Minato recently used up his one and only bandaid and now his life is in fate's hands. ]

How about...

[ He falls silent and starts counting in his head, ignoring anything Laurent says for the next ...40 seconds before he starts feeling discomfort ...50 and he has to breathe out but can hang in there a bit longer with empty lungs before...

At 60, he draws in breath and feels the pressure lift. ]

A minute.

[ And then Laurent has to pull up really really really fast before Minato drowns. ]

[ Laurent gets what Minato is doing when he falls silent, given their conversation topic. So when he hears Minato inhale... ]

50 seconds. I don't have super strength to pull you up that quickly.

55. I'm sure I can hold my breath for longer with practice. It's just been a while since I was active.

[ All those months of sprinting at and away from monsters, of climbing stairs, and of racing his dog, he's no slouch. But then he spent a week lying in the sand eating nothing but apples, so here he is. ]

[ Laurent was about to doubt until he remembers the things Minato told him. Hm. Well. You know what, it's fine. ]

I hope you won't be using your wings in any way. It'll tire you out easily.

[ Dead weight. ]

[ Dead weight will be useful this time around; he can sink just by doing nothing, and Laurent has the hard job of hauling him out of the water. ]

No, I don't think I need it. I've figured out how to keep everything flat behind me, so I think it'll be okay...

[ Laurent, for one, is glad that Minato has learned more about how to control his wings. He finishes braiding the clothesline. It's... shortened after he's braided it, but that couldn't be helped. ]

Alright. Start moving to the center, so I can sit there while you go diving.

[ Figuring it out doesn't mean being good at it, but. It'll work out.

Minato nods and starts moving to the center, careful not to slip off before that lifeline will have to become a fishing line. ]

...okay. Can you tie one end around my wrist? And I'll do yours.

Sure.

[ Laurent moves when Minato does, and when they meet up at the center, Laurent gives Minato one end of the string and ties a figure 8 knot around his wrist, making sure it's very secure. It's the strongest knot he knows... hope it won't fail him. ]
