The Move-In

You’ve spent the week adjusting to island life by getting to know one another, figuring out what to do with all those presents, gathering your resources and selling them off to Tom Nook. The weekend is finally here, though, and that’s something to celebrate!

...But when you wake up on Saturday, whenever that may be, the environment you’re in is not the tent you remember falling asleep in. Rather, you’re inside of some kind of house with a white wall and ceiling, wood lined across the bottom of the walls. The floor is wood, too, shiny and glossy as the sun rays shine through the one window in your house. Whatever you had lying out in your tents is still arranged in the same general order you had your things in before. Furthermore, you’re still lying on your camping cots with the same people who fell asleep in the tent with you, but if you decide to get up and investigate, you’ll find two other rooms other than the one you’re in.

Facing the door from the inside, if you look to your left, you’ll find...a bathroom! It’s got a basic toilet, sink, and a bathtub with a showerhead for you to use. There are also enough bath towels for each person hanging on a towel rack. The walls are white but the floor in here is tiled instead of wooden. The room across the bathroom, however, is empty. It has the same wallpaper and flooring as the main room you found yourself in.

It’s a small, comfy place you’re staying in, but the real question is… When did this happen? Only one way to find out.

And sure enough, if you’re awake by nine AM, Tom Nook will rally everyone to Resident Services for his morning announcements.

“Good morning, everyone, and welcome to your first weekend on Isle Sonrisa! As you’ve all probably already noticed by now, we were able to upgrade your tents last night into houses! Don’t worry, there is no fee for this upgrade -- but now you finally have a place where you can decorate your house with all the furniture you were able to get in the mail. For any excess items you may have… Might I suggest a yard sard of some sort, hm?”

He tilts his head a little. He thinks this is a good idea!

“Alternatively, houses all come with storage. There’s a small little storage shed in the back of everyone’s houses that can fit many, many items. If you don’t want to sell your items to me or hand them off to someone else, you can store them inside of there.”

Tom Nook nods his head. “Yes, yes. I’d like to suggest that you all take this weekend to decide how to arrange the items you’ve gotten in the mail...and one more thing about those items: You can put them outside, too. For example, oh, an exercise area might be nice…” He sounds a little wistful when he says it, but promptly shakes his head afterwards.

“Ah-! Before I forget...erm… It seems as though one of our friends has unexpectedly left the island. We don’t know where or how he left, you see...but Heimdall is no longer here. We’re still working on figuring out a way to send you all home, and we’re trying to track him down, too.”

He looks very guilty about that, at least. But the moment passes, and he perks up again, smiling at everyone as best as he can. “Alright, that’s it! You can spend the weekend however you’d like to, but with your new homes being built and all the furniture some of you have received, well… It may be a good idea to work on that, no?”

55. I'm sure I can hold my breath for longer with practice. It's just been a while since I was active.

[ All those months of sprinting at and away from monsters, of climbing stairs, and of racing his dog, he's no slouch. But then he spent a week lying in the sand eating nothing but apples, so here he is. ]

[ Laurent was about to doubt until he remembers the things Minato told him. Hm. Well. You know what, it's fine. ]

I hope you won't be using your wings in any way. It'll tire you out easily.

[ Dead weight. ]

[ Dead weight will be useful this time around; he can sink just by doing nothing, and Laurent has the hard job of hauling him out of the water. ]

No, I don't think I need it. I've figured out how to keep everything flat behind me, so I think it'll be okay...

[ Laurent, for one, is glad that Minato has learned more about how to control his wings. He finishes braiding the clothesline. It's... shortened after he's braided it, but that couldn't be helped. ]

Alright. Start moving to the center, so I can sit there while you go diving.

[ Figuring it out doesn't mean being good at it, but. It'll work out.

Minato nods and starts moving to the center, careful not to slip off before that lifeline will have to become a fishing line. ]

...okay. Can you tie one end around my wrist? And I'll do yours.

Sure.

[ Laurent moves when Minato does, and when they meet up at the center, Laurent gives Minato one end of the string and ties a figure 8 knot around his wrist, making sure it's very secure. It's the strongest knot he knows... hope it won't fail him. ]

[ Minato ties a simple half knot. It's the only knot he knows, and he hopes it won't fail him. Maybe Laurent can redo it better in the minute that Minato's underwater, because once that is done, he carefully stands, turns to the side of the plane, takes a deep breath and jumps in. ]

[ Laurent is ever diligent, making sure the line is good and reties the knot that Minato left while there's still some left before Minato goes too deep. He also makes sure to have a steady hold onto the seaplane so that he doesn't fall in himself.

Ganba, Minato. ]

[ The water is clear enough that Minato's easily seen going down, tail lashing behind him and getting in the way of his legs as he kicks to propel himself deeper. He swims as deep as he can, looking around as he does so.

There's a heck of a lot of fish. Also a disappointing lack of bodies. He waits for his minute to be up for Laurent to reel him back in. ]

[ When the Promised Time is here, Laurent gives the string a sharp tug to let Minato know that he'll be reeling him in and then proceeds to pull him up a second later.

He knows there are sharks in these waters, so he's still feeling pretty worried despite everything. ]

[ Perhaps Laurent expected this, but he gets no help of Minato swimming up on his own, adding on to the time that Minato's spending underwater as he feels his chest burning and eyes straining to see out into the distance for as long as he can, and when his head breaks the surface again he takes several deep inhales and exhales before speaking. ]

...nothing. Let's keep going.

[ He half-expected this, but didn't want to be right!! Anyway, Laurent holds out a hand to Minato to help pull him back up on the seaplane. ]

We'll go a little further before you dive in again.

[ He gets out a vinyl umbrella, closes it and wraps the little tie around it. It's a makeshift paddle he uses to guide the drifting seaplane a little. It's better than nothing, he thinks. ]

[ He's forgotten how much of an effort it is to haul himself up out of the water, and makes a mental note to just stay there next time and maybe help push the plane along in the water. But he's up already, pressing the heel of his palm against his neck as he wills his pounding heart to calm down, and scanning the horizon for any hint of red--

There's a bottle bobbing in the near distance, and he points towards it. ]

Hey... 2 o'clock.

[ When Minato retrieves the bottle, he'll find a Swinging Bench DIY packed cozily inside! Have fun! ]

[ It's too bad that message bottles are becoming common occurrence, or Laurent would have guessed that it was Heimdall's last words stuck in a bottle. Laurent rows the umbrella to get within the vicinity of the bottle and scoops it up after opening the umbrella. Convenient. He hands it to Minato for him to open though. His arms are getting tired. ]

[ The dying message thought crosses Minato's mind anyways.

Minato takes the bottle and tries to ease out the cork, but he isn't strong enough for that. Hmmmmmmmmmm...

It gets smashed against the side of the plane, broken glass shallowly cutting up Minato's fingers in the process, and he dips his hand in the water for a second to wash off the blood before shaking out the DIY recipe so he doesn't get it dirty. ]

A swinging bench. Cool.

[ From the depths of the sea, dark shapes take notice of the drops of red and start to congregate around their plane. ]

[ Laurent was about to comment Minato smashing the bottle, but then sees him bleeding... then dipping his hand in the water. It's salt water?? Wouldn't that hurt--

Then he notices the dark shapes gradually surrounding the seaplane. Oh... oh no. ]

... Either the fish love your blood or you attracted sharks.

[ Can't read the DIY recipe if it's stained with blood. Minato looks over the edge and makes sure his feet and tail are out of the water. ]

It's okay. They're sea animals. Can't get on land.

I wouldn't exactly call the seaplane "land", if they can just flip it over with ease.

[ Though, Laurent no longer looks too worried. He has a plan for the worst case scenario, and he'll probably have to count on his luck for it to work. ]

It doesn't look like you can dive though.

[ Don't test that-- ]

Do you think so?

[ He looks from the water to the cockpit- still locked, with some regret he hadn't thought to ask Serval smash her way into this door too. ]

If we keep going, we'll get away from the blood. And then maybe you can dive?

[ me, looking through laurent's inventory to see if he could smash the door with something: ]

I'll have to pass. I don't want to be potential shark food even if we do get away from the blood.

[ For all he knows, sharks could mistake the seaplane as some awkward seal to munch on. ]

[ me, sitting on the shark idea all morning with no plan for getting them out of it, ]

Okay. I'll go, then.

[ They're papercut slices on his hand and nothing too deep, as far as he can see, so they'll heal up once they're dry. He blows on it a little. ]

[ It doesn't sit well with Laurent, so he gets out one crocheted sock and wraps it around Minato's hand and ties it tightly in hopes to staunch the blood flow. ]

Let me move the plane away first.

[ Then he'll resume rowing... if actual sharks come, Laurent will surely make them submit. Somehow. ]

[ You're supposed to like. bop them on the nose or something?? that sounds incredibly fake, but he thinks he heard that from a movie and most of his life experience comes from watching movies. ]

If there are sharks and we catch one... we'd be able to feed everybody for a while. No need to overfish... if that's possible. Been talking to some people worried about messing up the ocean and plants and stuff.

There's no need to worry about that. No matter how much wood we cut from trees, some of them still stand. Not to mention apples seem to grow back on trees in three days.

[ It's like the magic of convenience is wrapped all around this island, and Laurent can't help but to feel uneasy sometimes when he actually thinks about it. ]

Shark is hard to prepare, but they also sell for thousands of bells.
