Week 1

WEEK 1 LOG
Weather: Clear skies all week!

    Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.

    Possible Objectives

    1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
    2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
    3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

    OOC Questions
    Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday / Friday

(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!

And last but not least, we have a Weekly Plotting Post for you all to use. We aren't sure how these will shake out, but we thought we should give them a try anyway.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let us know! Have fun!)

Maybe I will!

[Except her luck isn't that good, so she instead manages to catch something a little more simpler.

...]

A frog?

[ Oh. Huh. Laurent looks at Iori's catch and honestly, from all the things he's seen so far, catching a frog by fishing shouldn't be one of the weirder things, but... it's the ocean.

...

He's not sure if he remembers frogs living in the ocean.
]

This place is weirder than I thought.

[personal profile] livefreely 2020-07-03 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
... Should I put the froggy back?

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You can... sell it.

[ Hm. It's just a small frog. But at the same time, money. ]

You can also put it in your pocket.

[ Despite how gross it sounds. ]

[personal profile] livefreely 2020-07-03 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Is selling a frog even ethical?

And I don't know if it'd have a nice home in my pockets.

Do you care about ethics?

[ ... ]

Then you'll probably have to let it go.

[ Frog ethics... ]

Let it be free--back in its ocean.

[She crouches down and puts it on the ground.]

Be free, frog-san!

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-04 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The frog looks up at Iori for a second with big eyes before hopping into the ocean. ]

You think you got the hang of fishing now?

[personal profile] livefreely 2020-07-04 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Maybe she'll see that frog again...]

Yep, I think I do! You're pretty good at teaching.

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-04 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. If I wasn't, I'd probably have to hand back the teaching certificate I got.

[ Iori Nagase, the snow white of small critters. ]

Oh, so you really are a teacher!

[Her eyes seem to light up.] Do you just teach kids?

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-04 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Working at a nursery school was for internship. I was a teaching assistant at a university with my own classes and such before I came here though.

[personal profile] livefreely 2020-07-05 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
What kind of classes?!

[Her eyes light up and there's an obvious interest sparkling in her eyes there.]

Classes that usually involved literature or writing credit. I made my students write essays based on books they read.

Ooh!

[She claps her hands together, looking excited.]

What books are your favorite?!
conceptualize: (pic#14101298)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-05 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have a particular favorite book, but I do have a favorite genre--mysteries without murder.
livefreely: (pic#13400104)

[personal profile] livefreely 2020-07-06 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Mysteries, huh... why? I wanna know!

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-06 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
There's some fun in figuring things out myself, and I like reading things that have a sense of urgency that doesn't involve the danger of dying. I think it opens up interesting scenarios.

Solving things definitely sound like a lot of fun...
