WEEK 1 LOG ♬
Weather: Clear skies all week!

Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.

Possible Objectives

1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

[ Like he said, it's situational. He doesn't really feel like it, but then Laurent offers to be there and then he does, just a little. ]

[ Since his hand was already dirty from ruffling Minato's hair once, he does it again. ]

[ Some people do that, offering to do things they don't want to, just because they think the other person would be happy with it. But Minato worries less about it, when it comes to Laurent, because the guy reaches out and messes up Minato's hair just because he wants, with no concern for the slight scrunch of Minato's nose at the gesture. He'll be dunking himself underwater soon anyways, so it's fine. ]

We don't have all the time in the world, though. Tom Nook says he's working on getting us out of here. And humanity's dying off soon too.

[ There are tons of things to comment on, but-- ]

Do you care about humanity about to save it from extinction? Or would you like to prevent it so you can spend some more time doing what you want?

... It's not like you have to go back to your own world, or even go back at all if you don't want to.

[ Mm... It's hard to say. "More" time is difficult when every second he lives feels like borrowed time, long past due. ]

...I'd save it if I could. I don't know what I would do- what I would do with myself- but other people have aspirations. Them losing the chance would be a shame. That's all.

Then would you do it for them? If they asked you to save them, would you try, despite not knowing how?

[ Minato's starting to sound like some kind of savior. Hmmmm. ]

Yeah.

[ He gave up his tent without knowing why, convincing Minato of things is generally easy. "Saving humanity" is a grand concept, something so large, it's easy to agree to do it, especially when you don't know exactly what it entails. ]

Step by step directions would be helpful, though...

... I hope someone had the manual back in your world.

[ Because like Laurent knows what it is?? But he can make an obvious guess-- ]

Do you think you'd be strong enough to defeat whatever is causing the extinction?

It's death. Not something that can be defeated. Strength doesn't have anything to do with it.

[ He shrugs, but- ]

I'm pretty strong, though.

[ Of all the things he's good at, killing is up there at the top. ]

... I'm sure there's some way to overcome it. I don't know much about the place you come from, but since you don't know what to do anyway, you might as well ask the people around you back there.

[ Laurent is just guessing, but Minato possibly wouldn't have become strong strictly by himself, right? No guide or anything?? Especially with how he is right now?! ]

Humanity has been looking for a way to cheat death ever since its conception... It's not something that should be overcome, I think. The world would be so crowded.

[ It already is so crowded. In term of the natural cycle of things, he's fine with it— on the other hand, the cycle getting stuck isn't how things are supposed to be either, so maybe it's that point he should be arguing. ]

Death happens all the time, but there must be a reason why humanity's extinction is happening right then and there, isn't it? So there must be something causing it that isn't just "death". That's what you need to overcome.

[ Or at least, that's what he thinks?? ]

I don't know how it's going to happen... What if it's another meteor?

Then destroy it.

[ Yeah.

Also, Minato said "another", so Laurent will assume that he's destroyed one already since he's still alive to tell him this. ]

[ He sure punched that first meteor out of the air with his bare fists, yeah ]

A concrete goal... Sounds more doable now.

[ It makes Laurent wonder if Minato is really empty as he seems--despite all his opinions and desires, there's no motivation.

He ruffles his hair again. ]

It sounds like you got some big things to do in the future, but I'll believe you can pull through. You're actually pretty persistent when you feel like trying.

[ He's never going to be able to untangle his hair at this rate... Still, he never does tell Laurent to stop. ]

Some people call that stubbornness... But thanks for saying so.

[ Laurent would give you proper hair care if you let him, Minato... ]

Sometimes, being stubborn isn't all that bad. Context matters, after all.

[ What if the moment he gets his hand on a razor he's taking the monk's advice and shaving his head ]

Mm. You're pretty stubborn yourself. In a... okay way.

[ What would Minato be without his emo cut??? It's like his identity. ]

Is that motivation in his voice? it's curiosity, and it's very similar ]

There has to be right timing.

[ Laurent, the ever calm, vague, man of mysteries... has succumbed to those moments already on the island, and he's here thinking that Minato would actually see more of that from him considering how... this guy is. Minato always worries him. His title of "Occasional Caretaker" might as well be "Full-Time Caretaker" at this rate. ]

I might even get angry.

I want to see that even more.

[ Somebody who is ever calm, vague, a man of mysteries being angry? It's a sight to behold- a constant wonder whether Laurent is even capable of anger, in the same way that it takes so much to draw something like anger out of Minato himself. ]

[ Laurent is getting that kind of feeling from Minato too. He wonders what it would be like if Minato was actually angry and motivated himself. Maybe if they're angry at the same time, the universe would implode and they would have to find a new island for vacation. ]

I'm not sure if I can hold up to such high expectations. You might be disappointed.

I'm used to it. And I believe in you.
