Weather: Clear skies all week!

Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.



Possible Objectives

1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!

[ Don't hand it to him-- but okay, he will carry it back to the airport, but then he's handing it back to her because between the two of them, Serval is the stronger one. ]

[Okay! She aims for... some random spot on the door, she's not very good at this, and tries to hit it.]

Myaaaaa!

[ Serval’s strike will shatter a good amount of the door! Her sheer force will be able to get a little less than half of the glass on the door out — keep going? ]

[She's going to put her face up to it and try to see inside first. Any sign of a battery?]

[ No sign of a battery, nope. But there might be more things inside... Continue? ]

[Okay! She tries to clear out more of the glass.]

Minato-san, do you see any wood? I don't wanna leave the door all broken after we're done.

[ He can't help smash down the door, but the least he can do is help pick up glass, stowing the shards away in a bucket. ]

Not planks of wood, but maybe we can cover it with fabric. I have extra clothes.

Okay! I have some too!

[She goes to investigate a box.]

[ Oh, nice. They can patch up the doorway later- Minato joins Serval inside and follows her to the counter, sifting through the cardboard box and picking up the stack of passports. ]

...Here's yours. And here's mine. [ He hands over hers when he finds it, and the same when he finds his own. ]

"Friendly sidekick"... Who's your partner?

That's what it says?

[Serval looks the passport over, only really registering the picture.]

It must be talking about Kaban-chan! I was helping her find out what kind of animal she was, and then I followed her to help her find where humans live. What does yours say?

You can't tell what animal somebody is by looking at them?

[ He angles his passport Serval's way so that she can read it too, assuming all she needs is to be able to see it. ]

I could normally, but it turned out Kaban-chan's a human, and I'd never seen one before, since they're maybe extinct. So I thought the Professor would know, and we took a trip to the library!

[She blinks at the passport blankly.]

I can't read it. But that's what you looked like before?

[compendiem]

Oh. Yeah... Did she look anything like me? [ lack of animal features, he means, passing a thumb over the picture on his passport. ] But yeah, this is what I looked like. Weird, huh?

[ "late-night something or other" just the sort of lazy description he'd give himself. but mostly, he stares at the half smile on his face, like he's in the middle of thought and isn't altogether happy with what he sees inside himself.

We'll just consolidate both threads and have Minato answer here, while Serval can investigate in the mod thread below. ]

This thing looks like a calendar. July... dunno what year. Probably last year? Something happened on the 20th, but I dunno what happened then.

Maybe we can ask Tom Nook-san! ...We're probably going to have to apologize for the door, too.

[ He looks like he doesn't want to apologize, but. Yeah, they should. ]

[ Clearing out the glass will allow Serval (and Minato, if he wants) into the airport. It’s dark and a little stuffy, but some of the sunlight shining in through the door will reveal a cardboard box on the staff counter, and a calendar on the wall near the counter. Investigate? ]

[She's a cat, of course she's going to look at the box. Is there anything in here of import?]

[ Yes, in fact...

You’ve found everyone’s passports! Feel free to flip through them, Serval. There’s all 34 of them inside, one for each new resident. Tom Nook doesn’t have one, it seems...

Otherwise, nothing else of note in the box! ]

[ What's the month/day/year on the calendar? ]

[ There is no year, and the calendar is monthly, but the month is currently July! It is possible to flip the pages back, however.

There's something about the 20th of this month, however... It has a star next to the number. The star looks handwritten, too. ]

[Serval can't read, but she does notice the pictures and claps before looking around anywhere else for anything vaguely battery-like.]

[ Nope, nothing battery-like at a first glance. Though the desk Serval is at does have a drawer... ]

[It's probably too small, but she's going to paw it open! Anything fun?]

[ There are two name tags that come with, well, a name, and a photo. One of the name tags belongs to a bird named Orville, and the other belonging to an identical bird named Wilbur!

That's about everything you'll find though. Sorry, no batteries here, Serval. ]

Oh! These people look nice!

[She puts the tags back where she found them and looks around.]

Aww, no battery. Maybe we can fix the plane some other way. [Or maybe it isn't broken...] Let's go fix the door now!

[And she's off out the door to go find her spare outfit and patch the door with it.]
