WEEK 1 LOG ♬
Weather: Clear skies all week!

Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.

Possible Objectives

1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

Thanks, Sonico. I actually worked as a teaching assistant back home. It's fun teaching a new batch of students every semester.

Did you have fun?

Each semester brought a new face and a new perspective, and it's fun getting to know them.

[ For a second, Laurent ponders whether he should say that he used 50 Shades of Gray and other questionable books as required reading for essays, but then he looks at Sonico in the face and decides against it. ]

I taught various subsections of literature classes.

Oh! I'm studying marine biology right now!

How's that working out for you?

[ Maybe Sonico is secretly a genius with aquatic animals?! ]

It's fun! But my classes are always in the mornings, and that's hard for me.

[She's sooooo bad with mornings.]

Not a morning person? I guess you don't have a choice in picking out the times.

[ Morning classes are evil... ]

Not at all! First year, apparently, means I don't chose my classes.

[IT SUCKS SO MUCH.]

A time will come when you'll be the one to choose your classes. Follow your passions and dreams.

[She giggles, as she punches the air!]

But... Does it get harder to work and go to school?

That depends on the person. I'm technically still in school, yet I'm a teaching assistant and work two other jobs. You could focus on school or you can just work. You can do both. As long as you know how to balance your schedule and not bite off more than you can chew, you'll be okay.

[ Though... Laurent should not be a standard for anyone. ]

[Sonico is really bad at over booking herself for her friends' sake.]

I work and have a band, besides school, so it does have some difficult times and some easy ones, but you're right!

It got easier as I got used to it.

[ He ran on five hours of sleep every night... sometimes even less. Sonico, please get your beauty sleep. ]

What's it like being in a band?

[Sonico smiles, excited.]

It's really fun! Making songs is very hard, but signing it and having fans is really fun.

Being the vocalist of the band sounds pretty fun as you said. What made you be involved in a band?

I like music a lot, and when I went to a concert, I met one of my friends, Suzu, and she saw me with my guitar and asked me if I wanted to join her band, so I did!
