Week 1

WEEK 1 LOG
Weather: Clear skies all week!

    Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.

    Possible Objectives

    1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
    2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
    3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

    OOC Questions
    Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday / Friday

(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!

And last but not least, we have a Weekly Plotting Post for you all to use. We aren't sure how these will shake out, but we thought we should give them a try anyway.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let us know! Have fun!)

No, Ground Rats. [ Now with proper emphasis! Especially as he felt a nibble on his fishing line, but it was only a nibble and not a bite. Keep going, little fishie. ]

They can grow quite large. Think cat sized or something. They're quite monstrous in appearances too, cooking and eating normally doesn't seem safe but if cooked right it's really delicious. Mouth watering, really.

So... monster rats.

[ That's interesting, Laurent thinks. There really are all kinds of places out there. ]

It sounds like how you prepare a puffer fish--dangerous if not done right, but delicious when you know what you're doing.

[ A fish finally bites and yanks down on Laurent's fishing line and Laurent quickly reels it up! He catches...

... A puffer fish. He laughs.
]

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-01 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
[ With the comparison, he can't help but laugh. ]

Well, you wouldn't be wrong. A lot of monsters back home definitely lined up with that kind of thinking in mind.

[ ...Pfft. What is that timing? His own line tugs, but he pulls up a.. Squid. His lips twitch. Thanks, he hates it. He mumbles quietly to himself. ] ..Guess I shouldn't be surprised.

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-01 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
[ Squid-ssi...

Laurent stuffs the puffer fish into an empty watering can and looks over at Dokja's catch.
]

Don't like squid?

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-01 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say I dislike it.

[ Tilts head, before he sets it aside in some container. Should he have Joonghyuk cook it? ...Now he watches as it wiggles a tentacle out at him, as if to say, "Please reconsider." ]

A nickname of sorts kind stuck with me for a long time because of one though. It's a long story. [ It's not, he just doesn't want to talk about it. His pride is hurt. ]
conceptualize: (pic#14102716)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-01 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ah. Well. Laurent will just assume Dokja was bullied, since he doesn't seem willing to talk about it. That's fair. ]

Now you can have some sort of proxy revenge. Maybe Joonghyuk can cook something like calamari apple salad.
afterword: (pic#14093566)

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-01 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ Dokja opens his mouth to say something but he's captured by those soulful looking eyes of the squid. ..He feels bad. ]

Or I can probably sell it for some currency. Tom Nook did say he would buy anything off our hands.
conceptualize: (pic#14102706)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-01 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, but you should eat something other than apples. Besides, you can always catch... more...

[ He sees something like a shark fin on the surface that's a little far.

Hm.

Worrying.
]
afterword: (pic#14101560)

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-01 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yeah...

[ Nods slowly, gaze drifting out and... ... ..? ]

Interesting, that almost looks like a fin? [ What are the chances of sharks being around this island? Hahaha ha. ..Maybe they shouldn't go swimming while they are here. ]
conceptualize: (pic#14102677)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-01 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Let's catch it.

[ 0 to 100 real quick. ]
afterword: (pic#14093568)

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-01 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
With our flimsy fishing poles?

[ That's not gonna happen. ]
conceptualize: (pic#14102724)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-01 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Please show me your fishing prowess, Mister Kim.

[ Laurent is already casting his line into the water. ]
afterword: (pic#14093867)

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-01 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt it's gonna be interested.

[ But, he'll humor him and toss his own line. Please don't come here, mysterious finned fish. ]
conceptualize: (pic#14102678)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-01 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Seeing as to how fish bite even without bait, it might be possible.

[ The fin is interested! It swims slowly to Dokja's line, but not really biting just yet. ]
afterword: (pic#14111970)

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-01 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Good point.

[ Why him... Suddenly, he wonders. If Tom Nook will buy anything.... ] ..Might make some money off it, now that I think about it.
conceptualize: (pic#5464053)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-01 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
It might make good money. If anything, you can try selling it to other people for better prices.

[ I was initially gonna spook Dokja with a suckerfish, but then I rolled rng and it really wanted me to put the Whale Shark out there, so that's what it's going to be.

It bites onto Dokja's line and yanks.
]
afterword: (pic#14111971)

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-01 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ah to be a sucker to catch a sucker, how dare you not give us that RNG. ]

Fair eno- [ Well that was a yank. Good thing he has fast enough reaction time to pull right on cue, doing his best to pull the pole back but the strength of this fish and a weak flimsy fishing pole? There's no way? This pole most definitely is going to break, right?

How high are the chances that both of them get crushed by this whale shark. ]
conceptualize: (pic#14102674)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-01 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
[ Laurent ditches his own fishing rod to help Dokja pull it up and with the power combined, the whale shark is flung into the air and... they should dodge. They should really dodge.

Right now.

If Dokja doesn't move, Laurent will tumble with him out of the way.
]
afterword: (Default)

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-02 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
[ whale, whale, whale, what do we have here?

Dokja is just a bit surprised that such a pole has enough strength in it to reel in this massive shark. Fortunately Laurent reminds him to move, and by remind him it's more like he suddenly gets tumbled along with.

Afterwards, he stares with wide eyes at the large fish. ]
That's a whale shark, right? [ It's.. a bit hard to believe? So, he pinches Laurent's arm. ]
conceptualize: (pic#14102728)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-02 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Apparently whale sharks can be from 18 to 33 feet long, so... damn. LMAO. Laurent feels the pinch, but doesn't do anything in response. Instead, he also stares at the shark that washed up on the shore. ]

I... believe so, yes.

[ Amazing. Laurent doesn't want this kind of good luck ever again. The whale shark just kind of stares at them both and squirms on land. ]
afterword: (Default)

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That's a big boi. ]

.. I don't really feel like carrying it around, so...

[ Nor see it struggle on land anymore than it needs to? For a moment he tries to lift it from its sides, or at least it looks that way until it just. Disappears into his pockets. A whole whale shark just vanished out of thin air. Yeah. ]

I see. So we have inventory space. [ ???? ]
conceptualize: (pic#14102711)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ ???

Laurent stares at where the shark used to be, then at Dokja, and then down at his pocket.
]

... Am I getting heatstroke?
afterword: (pic#14101560)

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Hm? You look fine to me.

[ Ah, right. Maybe he should explain. ] It seems like our pockets can hold a good amount of items and just about anything. I had a coat back home that had the same function except I imagine this isn't nearly as unlimited.

Would require some experimenting to see how much we can hold.
conceptualize: (pic#14102740)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen something similar, but it would hold an infinite amount of things, as long as it would fit inside a pocket.

[ ... ]

A shark doesn't fit inside a pocket normally.

[ It's like some sort of culture shock. ]
afterword: (pic#14093865)

[personal profile] afterword 2020-07-03 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ Don't question AC mechanics. Food growing in three days? Tools, well all items of all kinds, disappearing into pockets? It's convenient. ]

You can think of it as how this world works. [ Easy! Nevermind that anyone would be surprised? Dokja thinks it makes sense himself. ]
