Week 1

WEEK 1 LOG
Weather: Clear skies all week!

    Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.

    Possible Objectives

    1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
    2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
    3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

    OOC Questions
    Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday / Friday

(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!

And last but not least, we have a Weekly Plotting Post for you all to use. We aren't sure how these will shake out, but we thought we should give them a try anyway.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let us know! Have fun!)

[He doesn't know the guy too well yet, but he seems a rather...proud sort of man? So he's going to go for the one that doesn't hype him up or is neutral.]

The reading one?
pr159: (but i'm not sorry)

[ Ha. He shakes his head. ]

Circumstances didn't really allow for the opportunity before that. I taught myself once I was in a more stable situation.

[ If you can... call being a Spirius agent stable... ]

[Huh. Color him a little surprised.]

Well, it's definitely admirable, then. Teaching yourself something like that can't be an easy thing.
pr159: (i'm tired of nots)

You pick up a bit on the way from signs and things, of course, but no, I wouldn't call it easy. Thankfully I could usually convince the person I was working with most of the time to write up all our joint reports for us in the meantime [ rip julius ], so I'd like to think no one was the wiser.

That's what friends are for.

[He gives a little smile.]

Do you have a rags to riches story, then?
pr159: (trust me you don't need to talk to me)

[personal profile] pr159 2020-07-03 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He'd seemed to be in a decent enough mood up until that point, but now there's just a deadpan stare back at that smile. ]

You'll note I didn't call him that.

[ a n y w a y ]

Something like that, though that romanticizes it a little more than I'd like. I got a job and I worked hard.

Fair enough.

[Definitely not going into that possible can of worms, then.]

That's admirable, then. [As long as he didn't step on anyone on the way.] What kind of company is it?
pr159: (i'm the only one who understands)

[personal profile] pr159 2020-07-03 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Good move. ]

Technological development, mostly, and in a very broad sense. We deal with everything from telecommunications to agricultural engineering to medicine. I'm in the medical field myself -- developing medical devices and techniques, medicines, and so on.

We're the only large-scale corporation around, though, honestly, so there's not much in my world that we aren't involved in in one way or another.

That sounds... Wow. I can't imagine any of that must be simple, then.

[Ren has a few concerns considering that it sounds like a sort of monopoly due to lack of competition, and that they seem to have their fingers in a whole lot of pies, but hopefully the higher ups aren't dirtbags like so many corporation heads lend to being.]
