Weather: Clear skies all week!

Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.



Possible Objectives

1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

[Zeke whirls the shovel around in a circle above his head, single-handed, before slinging it over his shoulder.]

There's still plenty of opportunities out there! Bottles, bugs, and fish!

[ Complete with sparkles behind the word if I knew how to do it. ]

Well, here I am on a strange island with a bunch of different people, brought here by a talking raccoon after being turned into a bird, so I think I'm already on one. But a new chapter in it? That's definitely on the list!

[conceptualize]

An adventure within another adventure--let's go find one of those bottles you mentioned. We can find out what's in them together.

[ Two heads are better than one... maybe? ]

Then let's hit the beach!

[Zeke points dramatically... then slumps slightly.]

You know, this isn't quite the same when you're missing your partner.

[conceptualize]

Yeah? Your partner sounds like a very irreplaceable person in your heart. What were they like?

[ Homesickness does that, and Laurent wonders if he either doesn't feel it or it hasn't sunk in yet. Either way, he's walking towards the beach. ]

[All right, that description makes Zeke laugh, head tipped back and wings splayed. It's funny for more reasons than he can easily explain!]

Pandoria's been my Blade ever since I swiped her core crystal on my way out of Tantal. We've been through hell and back together.

[conceptualize]

[ There are so many fantasy elements in that single sentence that Laurent takes a second in order to let that information sink in. ]

Your Blade, huh? Your partner is a weapon?

What, no Blades where you come from? You know, resonate with a crystal, out they come, partner in battle, pass you ether, that sort of thing?

I'm starting to think Alrest might have been a bit special in all that.

[conceptualize]

Perhaps? We necessarily don't have a need to battle where I came from. There are only humans. No powers.

[ Right. ]

[Seeming to shed a bit of his carefree attitude, Zeke glances over Laurent's way.]

Humans can battle just fine without any powers at all, chum.

[That would sound more ominous, serious, or wise coming from ANYTHING bu a shoebill.]

[conceptualize]

[ He got regularly threatened by a little girl who could end his life at any moment, so you know what. That's fair. Zeke the shoebill's message gets across to Laurent, but Laurent being Laurent is... well. ]

Well, of course. I'm just saying that the usual every day life for a human doesn't require fighting for their lives.

Well, that's what makes Drivers stand out. But if we didn't have Drivers, maybe we'd have less war. Or more monsters...

[conceptualize]

A tradeoff for everything, right?

[ He figures, since if there are people who can fight, there will always be people who are hungry for power. ]

I suppose that's something that doesn't change no matter which world you're in. People who aren't human who look down on humans, despite being very human-like themselves seems to be another trend.

I'm used to seeing it the other way. Humans can have a tendency to look down on Blades sometimes. Not most of them, by any measure, but it happens.

[And sometimes it leads to real messes...]

I'm all for equality when it comes to living life the way you want to, as long as it doesn't infringe on someone else's.

[ Irony. ]

People can still be very horrid either way--

[ Oh, it's... a bottle on the shore, though Laurent doesn't make any movement to go pick it up. ]

[Oooh, a bottle! Zeke will just speak louder as he goes to scoop it up, to make sure he's still heard.]

Some people. Most are jolly decent souls. Whatever form they might take!

[conceptualize]

Would you call yourself a jolly, decent soul?

[ Because Laurent thinks Zeke is certainly that. ]

What's inside?

The damn thing is empty! [Why even have a bottle if it doesn't have something nifty inside?! Zeke angrily kicks it back into the water.]

[conceptualize]

[ Ah... goodbye, bottle. Laurent thinks the empty bottle could have been used for something, but alas. ]

I'm sure we'll find something, like--

[ That sure is a small box floating up in the air with a balloon. That bottle sure would have come in handy. ]

Huh.

[No time wasted! Zeke pulls out his shovel and begins to aim.]

[ If Zeke is really the guy he claims to be, Laurent thinks he'll have no problem aiming with the shovel and actually popping the balloon. Though, he'll also assume Zeke wasn't always a shoebill for many reasons, so he gets out an apple to be backup in case Zeke misses.

Ganba, mister shoebill. ]
