Week 1

WEEK 1 LOG
Weather: Clear skies all week!

    Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.

    Possible Objectives

    1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
    2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
    3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

    OOC Questions
    Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday / Friday

(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!

And last but not least, we have a Weekly Plotting Post for you all to use. We aren't sure how these will shake out, but we thought we should give them a try anyway.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let us know! Have fun!)

Whoa.

[ Minato doesn't believe he's strong enough to bash open rocks with his brute strength, so he stands a safe distance away and watches Scintilla go at it. ]

Is there really stuff inside of it...?
lightsmith: (in the end i wouldn't care)

[Just gonna...look from her not-a-pickaxe to the rock for a minute. Honestly, she's found weirder things in mining deposits.]

Looks like it.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-01 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
[ He's a bit dubious, but he reaches down and- glances over at Scintilla as if asking permission to touch whatever's inside the rock- and then picks up a handful of soft clay, frowning a little when it puddles in his hand. ]

Like an easter egg... weird.
lightsmith: (in the end i wouldn't care)

[personal profile] lightsmith 2020-07-01 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not that weird. Usually I'd be able to get something like water or rock salt--clay's a new one, but I can't say I'm too surprised.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-01 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I can imagine rock salt, especially by the ocean, but how does water get into a rock?

[ Especially one like this, sitting out on the island away from shore ]
lightsmith: (if it can keep me strong)

[personal profile] lightsmith 2020-07-01 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
[A shrug.]

Never asked.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-01 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
[ So... it's just a thing that happens, and we accept it. ]

...Okay. Is this all you've been finding in them?
lightsmith: (as if it were taken from a dream)

[personal profile] lightsmith 2020-07-01 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
So far? That and a bit of iron is about the shape of it. This isn't the kind of pickaxe I'd normally want for a job like this, so if I can make a better one, who knows.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-01 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
My axe has been pretty prone to breaking...

[ then again, he's out there smashing plane windows with it, not rocks or whatever it's intended purpose was ]

Can you make anything stronger with the iron, maybe?
lightsmith: (if it can keep me strong)

[personal profile] lightsmith 2020-07-01 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Mm...if I had a forge, sure. I could piece something rudimentary together with a little iron.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-01 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Is there much of a difference between a forge and a campfire...?

[ One he can manage, the other not so much. ]

There's the workbench, but I dunno if there's everything you need there.
lightsmith: (in the end i wouldn't care)

[personal profile] lightsmith 2020-07-01 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Campfire ain't hot enough to melt iron, not even close. I'd need somethin' enclosed, keeps all the heat in and raises the temperature a good bit.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-01 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
That's... a bit beyond me. I dunno how I'd manage that, unless this island has a volcano or something.
lightsmith: (if it can keep me strong)

[personal profile] lightsmith 2020-07-01 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it doesn't need to be that drastic. I could probably build a half-functionin' forge with enough material.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-02 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
What sort of stuff do you need? I can help find material for you, and maybe... get to watch you work in return?
