Weather: Clear skies all week!

Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.



Possible Objectives

1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!

[Sonico can be found all over the island! First she'll be collecting weeds and sticks, until her pockets are full, just because it was something to do! She's not good with mornings but she managed to be awake for the announcement!

During the afternoon, she'll be either sitting by her tent and enjoying some really delicious apples, or by the airport just trying to figure out what's in the building to see.

And in the evening she'll be at the beach, trying to catch fish, and failing.]

[ Minato catches Sonico early morning before everybody scatters their separate ways, coming up to her just as she pulls a handful of weeds out from the ground, shakes off some of the dirt, and sticks it into her pocket. ]

...You think he was serious when he said he'd buy weeds?

Oh! Yes! I don't think mister Nook would lie to us.

[She smiles at Minato, as she spots more weeds off to the west.]

Would you like to help?

I guess...

[ Not really...

But he turns towards the direction of the weeds anyways-- and then turns around again. ]

Let's grab one of those carts first. We can fill that up, and you don't have to get dirt in your pockets. Tom Nook's buying weeds, not dirt.

Oh! good idea!

[The cart sounds like the best idea ever, actually!]

We can share whatever money he gives us too.

You keep it. As long as there's food and somewhere to sleep, I dunno what I'd do with money. Whatever's supposed to be coming up next week... I can't imagine he'd make us have to pay in order to survive, right?

[ Trying to think the best of Nook, but... Well. He'll just try not to think, finding one of the carts and emptying it out before wheeling it over so Sonico can empty her pockets out of what she already has. ]

Probably not survive, no, but maybe...[She wants a guitar ok?] Oh! A store, maybe!

[She empties her pockets on the cart, and oh boy that's a lot of weeds and sticks.]

That's all I have! Let's get more!

I guess if it's already planned and paid for, there's no reason not to skydrop a store... even if there might be nobody here by then.

[ Your priorities, Nook!! ]

We'll see... [ He goes ahead and pushes the cart along, making his way towards the grassiest place he sees-- and then sort of stops and frowns. ] Can you tell the difference between weeds and grass?

A store would be amazing!

[She stops, and stares, and then stares some more.]

Yes.

[She crouches down, and pulls on grass.]

This is grass, nice and when you pull it, there's no root!... Well, they do have a root but it's very small.

[she moves a little more, looking around until she spots some weeds, pulling it out.]

These are weed! See how when they grow a lot they have flowers? Well, they have roots!

[She's proud of this, her grandma showed her how to keep the garden clean!]

[ Color him impressed, crouching down next to Sonico and not giving anything an experimental tug until he finds something similar to the weeds she points out, trying to match what the leaves look like because otherwise he'd be going around tugging everything to see if it comes out easily. And he can't exactly put grass back if he messes up. ]

The flowers are nice. Shame we have to pull them out... but they make it hard for the grass and other things to grow, right?

Yes!

[She smiles, and looks around.]

There is a lot of flowers here though, so as long as we take out the weeds, it'll make it easier for them to grow!

[ It doesn't look like the flowers need much more help, with how beautifully they're growing, but it's still a pity about getting rid of weeds, like they're choosing what gets to live and what does not.

Job's a job, though, and he grips the next closest bunch and pulls close down by the base so he can get out all the roots. ]

--mmph! [ It comes out in a little shower of dirt, and then a larger shower when he tosses it unceremoniously into the cart instead of walking it over and dropping it inside. ]

All that's left is dirt. Should we plant something in its place? Or would that crowd the flowers?

[She doesn't know how to fish at all!]

[Walder's up bright and early to greet the day and explore more of the island! ...and hey, he'll notice Sonico gathering stuff...]

So, doing a little cleanup, eh? Makes sense to me!

Ah!

[Sonico smiles, as she nods.]

I thought to clean up the stuff that makes no sense to be on the ground, and maybe sell it to mister Nook?

That's a splendid idea! For our living area, anyway. I don't think we should go too overboard, though! It's all about responsible management.

Yes!

[There's a lot of sticks and weeds in the way.]

We can always use them to make new materials somehow.

[whereswalder]

That is right, even though you’d think it’d be a little harder to use weeds for anything if you just kind of mash ‘em together willy-nilly. Somehow, it just works!

Have you built anything here?

[Because she just got some bells out of the weeds, not tools.]

Just a few tools so far, because hey, if you get those, you can get more things, right?

...those didn't come from the weeds, though. Mostly the sticks.

But I still don't know how that works, heh.

Oh! Yeah, I totally forgot! Then again, I kind of feel bad about bothering the bugs when they're just living their lives and doing their thing, so I haven't really caught a lot of 'em.

awww, the bugs usually don't bother that much for weeds though!

[They like the fancy stuff.]

Oh, I meant bothering them by catching them! Though I guess I’m a little worried about us taking too many weeds out...
