Week 1
Weather: Clear skies all week!
- Arrival
At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.
Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.
“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”
Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.
“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”
If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”
And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”
He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.
Possible Objectives
1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!
As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).
Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday / Friday
(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!
And last but not least, we have a Weekly Plotting Post for you all to use. We aren't sure how these will shake out, but we thought we should give them a try anyway.
As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let us know! Have fun!)

Somebody killed you...? For entertainment's sake?
no subject
I tried to find the mastermind, but I got executed.

Kaede's dead. Minato's supposed to be too. That's another point in purgatory's favor. ]
...That really sucks. Must've been scary. And frustrating. —probably still is, if it's only been a week. I'm sorry. We don't have to talk more about it.
no subject
It's okay. It was scary, and I worry about everyone else but... I know they can get out.
You know, talking about it makes me feel a little better.
no subject
[ When he and his friends were faced with their inevitable deaths, he clammed up and never talked to anybody about it. His friends eventually talked, but not really with him, so... He holds his doubts, but also his hopes- Hope is much easier to come by when applied to others, somehow. ]
You really believe in everybody, huh? That's... [ optimistic. foolish. ] strong. It takes a lot to hold onto hope like that, especially what you went through.
no subject
Holding onto that hope is all I can really do at this point. Otherwise... I don't think I would be able to do anything.
no subject
[ But hope, hope is scary. For a whole month, he'd wallowed in futility, too scared to hope even to the end. ]
no subject
It's hard to not let that feeling come over me sometimes... I'm thankful for everyone here, because they have all helped keep it away.
[ It's certainly been chaotic, but it's a welcome chaos that reminds her of the people she left behind. ]
no subject
[ He wishes it were the same for him, but the prospect of death isn't behind him- it's in the front, and every day he spends here feels like another step in the death march towards the guillotine. ]
Having people around so nobody has to dwell on death, it's probably the only good way to stay sane. That's just how living is, huh? The threat is always there... but you do what you can not to dwell on it.
no subject
[ Maybe she would have handled everything better, if she had. ]
What's most important is that we make good memories while we can. It might not always keep us from dwelling on it, but it will help.
[ Because despite everything that happened before she got there, she did make a few good memories in spite of it. She met people that are important to her now. ]
no subject
If you knew death was certain and imminent, like— [ mm, explaining about Nyx and Shadows and stuff is too much, so instead he settles on a substitute ] a terminal illness with a two month life expectancy. Would you rather your doctor never told you so you can live the rest of your life ignorant, but to the fullest? Or would you rather know, and suffer and struggle and maybe die early 'cause you're pushing yourself so hard. Because you don't want to die...
no subject
I... don't know. I think I would have regrets either way, and wish things were different. Part of me would want to know so I could make sure the people I love know that I care about them. But... if I didn't know, I wouldn't worry about it.
[ She smiles, a little wry. ]
Sorry I can't give you a better answer than that.
no subject
[ And either way, there's no perfect solution. The only way to stop such regrets is if you never knew in the first place— a freak accident that blindsides you might be more merciful than a long, drawn out death. Minato's decision to erase his friends' memories might not be the horrible horrible mistake it was going to be if he had the last two seconds to follow through with pulling the trigger.
It's all conjecture. It doesn't really matter. ]
But I appreciate hearing your opinion either way. So thanks for talking to me about this.
no subject
If there's anyone who should be thankful, it's me. Thank you for talking to me about this. There's a lot of feelings I've been keeping inside and I feel better now.
[ While she still feels all mixed up inside, her heart feels calmer. There's still a lot she needs to work through, but she's not alone here. ]
I'm also thankful you told me a little about what's going on back home for you.
no subject
So maybe it's better, even if he doesn't feel it. ]
...Yeah. I haven't really talked to anybody about it much. But at the very least, acknowledging it is better than pretending it doesn't exist. So I'm glad for that.
no subject
I think it's better to acknowledge it too. If you ever want to talk about it more, I'll listen! I probably won't give you any good input, but I can at least listen.
[ It's the least she can do. They're all trapped here together, and Kaede wants to do what she can to see that everyone around is at least a little better off. ]
no subject
[ He shrugs, because that's the crux of it. What he does with his life is on him, from action to consequence, and more and more he has to remind himself that. ]
So I appreciate it. I'm glad I have somebody I can go to.
