Week 1

WEEK 1 LOG
Weather: Clear skies all week!

    Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.

    Possible Objectives

    1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
    2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
    3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

    OOC Questions
    Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday / Friday

(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!

And last but not least, we have a Weekly Plotting Post for you all to use. We aren't sure how these will shake out, but we thought we should give them a try anyway.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let us know! Have fun!)

[ what ]

Even without bullets that seems kind of extreme.
That's how you convince spirits to help you?
Are they trying to save you?

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-04 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah.
...That might be part of it, actually.
Never thought of it that way.
We'd absolutely die without them.
So maybe it's partly out of pity...
sunspark: (ᴛᴏᴏ much gravity)

[personal profile] sunspark 2020-07-04 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Huh, his guess was right? Maybe they're more like Rieze Maxian spirits than he realized. ]

The guns don't hurt the spirits?
You mentioned it was only people who tried to force it that got any backlash.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-04 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think so...
I think it just wakes them up, like a phone call.
I only had problems once, the very first time I contacted them, but after that, everything was fine.
Not the case for some people I know.
The spirits wouldn't listen, and tried to kill them.
sunspark: (ᴄᴀᴜsᴇ all these plans i've been making)

[ Jude's response takes a minute to come through this time because he absolutely has to write all of this down. ]

That makes sense. Even where I'm from using spirits artes gets easier with practice.
Our artes can backfire, too, but cases of spirits attacking people are pretty rare.
Did they attack physically, or was it some sort of mana-based backlash?

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-04 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure. Both, maybe.
For me, it felt like my head was splitting open and my entire body was on fire.
At the same time, the spirit was still fighting in order to protect me.
But for somebody else, the spirit had its hands on her, trying to choke her.

[ There's another long pause before he responds. ]

Sorry to ask so many questions! It's just really interesting.
And really different from what I know.
Is it possible for spirits to manifest spontaneously, or does it require a caster no matter what?

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-07 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I don't mind.
Wish I were better at explaining things, but I'll do my best.
I'm not sure about that question, though...
From what I've experienced, a caster brings the spirit into the world.
Otherwise, they exist in another realm.
Something like them can exist apart from people, though.
We call those Shadows, and the spirits Personas.
sunspark: (ᴅᴏɴ·ᴛ know where the money goes)

[personal profile] sunspark 2020-07-07 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's like that for us, too.
Spirits can manifest, but when they don't they exist in their own world separate from ours.
So is it possible to summon a Shadow the way you could a Persona?
Or is it transformative? Like Shadows are the 'default', but when a caster calls on one it becomes a Persona?

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-08 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure...
They both come from the same place.
Their appearance and power are also similar.
I think it's something like...
Shadows are those who run wild and act upon the instinct to consume and survive.
Personas are those who align themselves with a person and allow themselves to be controlled.
Losing control of a Persona sounds like a good way to reform a Shadow, but we don't exactly want to test that out...
sunspark: (ᴄᴀᴜsᴇ all these plans i've been making)

[personal profile] sunspark 2020-07-09 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, I imagine not.
Does that mean when you manifest a Persona, it stays with you on a long term basis?

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-09 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on what we're calling them for.
Mine usually only appear for the second or two required to fight.
One of my teammate's helps her analyze and communicate and stays out with her longer.
They're always with me, though.
I can always feel them in me- just not here.
