Week 1

WEEK 1 LOG
Weather: Clear skies all week!

    Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.

    Possible Objectives

    1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
    2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
    3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

    OOC Questions
    Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday / Friday

(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!

And last but not least, we have a Weekly Plotting Post for you all to use. We aren't sure how these will shake out, but we thought we should give them a try anyway.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let us know! Have fun!)

[Thanks to some trading with Minato, Theo's decided to actually try giving this resource collecting thing a shot by hitting some rocks -- with a shovel, even, when kicking it with his sandal-clad foot only gets him hurt toes.

Also might heck around and pick some apples, since he's pretty interested in seeing how a bushel of those is meant to become a dress... Sounds messy.

Not messy enough, considering the fact that he whacks those suckers with a hammer and by gosh that just shouldn't work.]

I got a bone to pick with whoever's responsible for this shit, this is stupid. [Who corrupted sweet magic so...]

[ Minato's been breaking axes all week trying to split rocks, why is it that that doesn't work but shovels do?? It's only the axe that he carries with him on his belt like he would a sword, mostly because a shovel is too heavy and ungainly, so he sits himself on top of one of the rocks and watches Theo work, until his rock perch has to be demolished as well. ]

People will start flocking here if they knew there's so much gold on the island...

[ RIP your native plants, Theo, everything would get torn up ]

[fun fact: in animal crossing, you can actually hit rocks with axes! it's just much less efficient, and also axes are better used for collecting wood.

another fun fact: minato with a weapon is incredibly disconcerting and theo doesn't like it one bit!! but he's doing the hard work and already promised the kid the reward, so he probably wouldn't be murdered with an axe, right?]

Yeah... Greed fucking everything up yet again... [Ugh. He sifts through the rocky remains before holding out a large clump of clay topped with a gold ore.] You just needed six for your thing, right? Consider the rest hush money.

Hush money for- what?

[ Who's the concerning one here, Theo? He picks up the clay and hesitates before taking the ore, because when will he ever need this... ]

[Yeah... The "when will I ever need this" is why Theo is splitting his rare prize at all.]

The island. Less people know about untapped resources, the less they'll come at the place like vultures that don't even have the decency to wait for their meal to be dead.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-07 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He looks down at the gold. It's true; the moment word gets out, the island will be swarming with people looking to blow it up into bits in order to mine all the gold out of it. ]

I... guess I can keep it for safekeeping. But there's thirty of us here. No way everybody's going to keep hush about it, especially if they take the gold home. Vultures will come no matter what.

Thirty of us now.

[No one said he had a good sense of humor...plus he sort of wants to test what the boundaries are on Minato's creepykid factor.]

I'll find other ways of bribing people...and for the ones that can't be bought, I've got a whole garden to feed.

[ He nods slowly, because this makes sense. ]

Murder is a more guaranteed method of silencing than bribery. Once they leave, you won't be able to catch them, right?

[ It's a zero consequence island, which is great but also dangerous. ]

Mm, probably. I dunno where everyone lives.

[He's concerning... Very concerning!! But despite being down for murder and staring off into the distance when his gaze wasn't boring into your soul, Theo's come to the conclusion that Minato's more or less a good kid. Probably.]

We do got consider island magic shenanigans. Say you really were a ghost back home -- means ghosts don't stay ghosts here, and that's double the work for you n' me.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-08 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
[ "more or less a good kid, probably" is better than downright dangerous, at least. This has been one of my more well-behaved Minatos, content to stare at the ground and scuff his shoes and mull over the necessity of having to kill 30+ people here and then double kill them once they're back home. ]

...Murder is such a pain. Maybe it'll be easier to just... have it so nobody ever finds the gold. Drop this into the ocean. Confiscate all the rocks before they're broken.

You want to fight the island god, then?

[MAYBE WE CAN ATTACK AND DETHRONE GOD]

[................]

Yes. [He says it with the seriousness of sincerity, face carefully blank.] They gave us these shovels and axes for resource-collecting...but we'll use them for murder and hiding the body.

I see.

[Her voiced drops to something strangely serious.]

We can axe the god for good...
