Week 1

WEEK 1 LOG
Weather: Clear skies all week!

    Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.

    Possible Objectives

    1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
    2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
    3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

    OOC Questions
    Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday / Friday

(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!

And last but not least, we have a Weekly Plotting Post for you all to use. We aren't sure how these will shake out, but we thought we should give them a try anyway.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let us know! Have fun!)

I do. Violin.

[ Preeeeeeeesumably also ocarina? He is absolutely sure he can figure it out. There's only six holes, so that's like. idk it's too hot to do the math rn but maybe only a couple hundred combinations of possible notes. ]

[He makes a noise that might be acknowledgement or a sign of being k pressed, but he doesn't lower that eyebrow just yet.]

Pretty sure strings and winds are different, but what the hell do I know? I can barely carry a tune. Let you know if I find a violin, too... I'll expect a concert.

[ Music is music and there is plenty of overlap to aid in figuring things out. It's fine! I don't play Animal Crossing so I had to look up whether violins exist and there are violin beetles, close enough. ]

Sure. Sonico was hoping for a guitar too, if you find one. That can probably be played like a violin.

[there is in fact a musical violin as a furniture item but it's expensive as fuck, good luck minato]

I think they call it a cello when it's that big... But yeah, sure, any musical shit and you're the first I'm calling, kid.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-07 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Heck yeah, he struck gold having Theo as a roommate. Meanwhile Theo has to continually wonder whether Minato will kill him in his sleep. ]

Awesome. Should I be on the lookout for anything for you?

[The more he can appease Minato with promises, empty or not, of musical instruments, the less he'll be inclined to murder him...right? R-right...]

Hmm... Gardening gloves, maybe. Hat with a brim so I don't have to deal with this fucking sun... That sorta thing.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-07 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[ If his hands are occupied with piano keys and violin strings, he can't use them for murder, it works out

Gardening stuff, easy to remember. In the meanwhile, though- ]

You can probably spike your hair forward to make a brim... It looks long enough.

[..........]

I'm starting to become less amused with you, kiddo. My hair is perfect as-is. I've cultivated this very refined look through extensive research in forward-thing, high-rise society.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-07 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He'll have to take Theo's word for it, because his own hairstyle is still stuck in middle-school preferences. ]

How can it be perfect if it doesn't shade your face? Mine does a pretty good job. For half a face.

[personal profile] aggroculture 2020-07-07 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm quite familiar. I moved beyond those days when my self esteem got better.

[hm probably too accurate, but hey! misery loves company, and the good old adage of 'it gets better'. Theo folds his arms behind his head and raises an eyebrow.]

It's a rad color and people like putting their hands through it, it's perfect. Besides, I like hats. It's all good.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-07 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ ...he wants to say something about the inevitability of hat hair, but the other thing takes precedence and he tries to discreetly wipe any dirt off his hands onto his pants. ]

Can I try...?

[ Putting his hand through Theo's hair. ]

[personal profile] aggroculture 2020-07-07 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[Can he -- ]

Hm? Try what?

[It's worth noting that if he weren't so slouchy, Minato would stand taller than Theo, who is looking at him with furrowed, confused eyebrows, because the only thing he could think that Minato might be referencing would be a super crazy thing so surely it isn't that.]

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-07 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Try reaching forward... silently... without further warning... finger tips to Theo's hairline. ]
