Week 1

WEEK 1 LOG
Weather: Clear skies all week!

    Arrival

At 9AM Monday morning, Tom Nook will take his place at the microphone once more. He has several bins in front of him that are filled with tools. Shovels, fishing rods, bug nets, watering cans, and axes. They look...well. Functional, but flimsy. Next to the tool bins are foldable carts that you can wheel around, presumably for the tools, and some Nook Inc. knapsacks. And now that the sun is out, you can see all of the red, yellow, and white cosmos growing about the island alongside all of the weeds.

Now. Whether you’re around or not, he’s going to start his announcements when a sizable group is present.

“Good morning, everyone! Now, I know yesterday was quite a rough start for all of us, but while we’re here, let’s make the most of our stay, hm? We have a few things to go over today.” He gives everyone his best smile (though he isn’t expecting much in return) and continues: “I know a lot of you must be hungry; overnight, we had another plane fly over seasoning, milk, eggs, and vegetables for us! Soon, we’ll have more ingredients; for now, if you need anything, the food we have on-hand can be found inside of the fridge in my tent.”

Well, that’s one thing taken care of, at least. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

“Next, the tools! These are what you have to start with, and, well, they aren’t exactly the most durable...but they will last for a little while. I estimate 20 uses each -- but when they break, never fear, for we have DIY Recipe cards for you to use in order to craft these tools again! I’ve included the DIY cards for your tools inside of your knapsacks; they give you the ingredients necessary to craft different things. You’re free to use the workbench in my tent to craft your new tools after they break. My best advice is to lay the materials out in the general formation of what you’re crafting and let the workbench do the rest.”

If you reach inside of your knapsack, you’ll find the cards in there...along with a cellular device of some sort. “Ah, yes,” Tom Nook says, “those are your Nook Phones. So far, you’re only able to send mass texts to everyone and receive text and call alerts from myself. Feel free to play around with those as much as you’d like, they’re solar-powered; just try not to break them, yes?”

And then, finally… “Lastly, I would like to talk about currency. I’ll provide you our currency -- bells -- and I will buy anything from you! Weeds, fish, bugs...anything! I have an ATM set up in my tent for you to easily deposit and withdraw your bells if you wish, yes, yes. If you’re wondering what you’ll be using those for...we’ll be having some special features for you starting next week! … If we can’t send you back home by then, that is.”

He looks nervous at that last part, but doesn’t mention anything beyond that regarding your situation. Tom Nook smiles at you and closes out the announcements; you now have several things you can do this week.

    Possible Objectives

    1. Gather natural resources to sell to Tom Nook and make some money! Bugs and fish list can be found here.
    2. Use those resources to craft a variety of different things -- DIY Recipes will speed things up and make them more refined, but you're free to do your own variant of crafting, too!
    3. Do some other exploration; the island section of the setting provides you with possible ways to get more resources (bottles, x-marks, balloons, etc.). Shaking trees and hitting rocks are also ways to get special items as well! If you are going to do these methods of exploration, please write “MODS” in your subject header and ping us on Plurk or Discord so we can reward you appropriately! All we ask is that you try not to go too overboard with this method of exploration (ten times a week per person, as an exaggerated example); use your best judgment!

As far as resource gathering + currency goes, we won't be keeping track of those so feel free to handwave as much as you'd like; as long as it's within reason (i.e. a character getting 1 million bells by the end of this week is...a little extreme).

    OOC Questions
    Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday / Friday

(OOC: Welcome to your Week 1 Log! We apologize for the info dump; Mod Coco who plays Tom Nook has work and will not be able to NPC throughout the week, so we wanted to get the information to you folks as soon as possible. That being said, our OOC Questions top level is available for you to use!

And last but not least, we have a Weekly Plotting Post for you all to use. We aren't sure how these will shake out, but we thought we should give them a try anyway.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let us know! Have fun!)

Depends on what you mean by that.

[ It could mean a bunch of things, so if Minato wants a slightly more direct answer, he would have to specify. ]

I wonder what they mean by "something or other" though.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-03 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Living in different places. Yours lists a country. Maybe you're a hobo...? It's okay if you are.

[ On the flip side, Minato's passport lists his most current city, although it could also refer to his birthplace. Laurent is just "America"... maybe he was born in a plane or something and couldn't be claimed by a specific city or state. ]

"Something or other" sounds about right, though.

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Minato's logic is sound, but it's still pretty funny to hear it. ]

Some passports just list countries too. I recognize Japan, at the very least. And I was well-off enough not to be a hobo.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-03 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never been out of the country, so I wouldn't know. I bet there's rich hobos out there, though. Seems like the rich person thing to do... travel the world.

[ Which in that case, he'd just hop fancy five star hotels, but still not be bound to a specific city. ]

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Contrary to expectations, I'm a fresh 24-year-old guy who has three jobs.

[ It's too late to travel now--he wants to add but decides against it. ]

I wouldn't doubt the existence of rich homeless people though. I've seen enough of them already. I haven't heard of your city though. Is it a small one?

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-03 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The idea of three jobs is immediately and utterly exhausting, and Minato goes to sit on top of the desk, looking over the rest of the room best he can in the darkness. ]

Pretty small, especially compared to your cities. Right along the water, but nothing very special... I guess it's gotten more and more development in the past few years.

[ But overall unremarkable, and he wouldn't expect people from America to know or care about tiny Japanese cities anyways. Does Minato know cities around the world? Nah. ]

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
A small city... how quaint.

[ Hm. Laurent is usually allergic to talking about himself, but small bits of useless info is fine. ]

I lived in a city with a university right in the middle of it, so it was always bustling with activity one way or another.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-03 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[ No, useless information is Minato's favorite, and he looks much more interested listening to somebody else talk about their lives than talking about his own. ]

Must've been crowded. Did the university have a really really big rock? Or a fountain?
conceptualize: (pic#14101298)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It had a big fountain in the middle of a giant courtyard. Students like to hang out around it. In the summer, stupid ones try to jump into it when the water is just as hot. It's fun to watch, if anything.

[ Laurent goes through several more passports until he's satisfied with looking at them and then puts them back into the drawer in a neat pile before looking to see if there's anything else. ]

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-03 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wha... Why would the water be hot? Unless it's supposed to be?

[ Even the ocean stays cool in the summer, though it's much much larger and that's where the difference lies. Minato follows Laurent's search with his eyes but doesn't offer to get up and provide any more assistance. Combing through the rest of the airport will probably require mod input, outside of the service desk here. ]

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a very scorching hot summer. The ones who jumped into the fountain were on a dare.

[ Laurent closes the drawer if Minato decides on putting the passport he has back inside. ]

You tend to see a lot of stupid things happen in universities.

[ So like... you should live through the apocalypse and go to college. ]

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-03 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He does return them, not having anything in mind for them. Return them to their owners? Nah. ]

What's the stupidest thing you've seen happen at the university?

[ Minato in college would be one of those guys who goes to every single club meeting for the free food and then naps on a hill on campus the rest of the day. ]
conceptualize: (pic#14102687)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The stupidest thing... let's see.

[ It takes him a second to think. Also, being in this airport while it's closed and stuff feels a little unnerving for some reason, so after taking one more glance around the place, he'll lead Minato out. ]

During a homecoming parade, someone drove a car into one of the fraternity houses. Miraculously, no one got hurt, but it was... quite a thing to watch.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-03 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[ hm, yeah, let's get out of here before Tom Nook makes them pay for vandalism, I hope word never gets back to Minato about that ]

Were you at the party? In the car? ...Driving the car?

[ Already university sounds so much cooler than high school. ]
conceptualize: (pic#14102677)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I was attending the parade from the sidelines.

[ Laurent was a good boy... behind the scenes on the other hand-- ]

I did manage to swindle around thousand bucks from some drunk kids at a party when playing poker. That was pretty fun.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-03 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
So this is your true nature.

[ Look at that face, Minato is not surprised at all. ]
conceptualize: (pic#14102739)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ something persona true self something something ]

I worked as a casino dealer in an expensive hotel as one of my jobs. I get paid a lot for card sharking rich people.

[ And get tips because he's attractive, I guess. He never really had a problem with money... ]

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-03 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[ then why three jobs!!!! retire ]

Oh... Do you get to meet a lot of drunk people?

[ The most interesting people: drunkards, and children. It's the unfiltered honesty. ]
conceptualize: (pic#14101288)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He needs to keep himself busy or he'll start Thinking about Things. ]

Sometimes they're drunk. They tend to get out of hand when they lose, so I have security drag them out. Despite how most people lose their money, they keep coming back. Though, it's just my job and I kinda like it.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-03 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Laurent needs to embrace 14 hour naps where you don't have to think at all; Minato can teach him all about that. ]

Just "kinda"?
conceptualize: (pic#14102694)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Laurent gives Minato something like an all-knowing smile. ]

Would you prefer it if I said something like, "seeing their frustrated faces fuel me with satisfaction I'll never be able to obtain otherwise"?

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-03 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. ...Well... no. Hm...

[ Kinda? It would make more sense, and is infinitely more relatable, but, ]

There's some pretty satisfying things in the world on level with frustrating others. But otherwise, yeah. That answer is better.
conceptualize: (pic#14102708)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-03 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I like teasing people, like the jail guy.

[ Laurent lives life on the edge, it seems. ]

There really is some sort of satisfaction when you see certain kinds of people's faces contort with frustration.

[personal profile] compendiem 2020-07-04 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Only the very strong or the very stupid can taunt others like that. Or both.

[ Movie Makoto would've been up for it, but Minato gets his kicks killing things instead, playing with the only strength he has confidence in. ]

You aren't worried, though? About the jail guy.
conceptualize: (pic#14102667)

[personal profile] conceptualize 2020-07-04 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ Laurent laughs a little. Ah, yes. The fresh air on the pier is the best with the seabreeze. ]

I'm not strong at all, but I'm not worried, because he's very predictable.

[ Laurent is gonna eat those words later. ]
