Final Log

THE FINAL LOG
Weather: Clear Skies

    The Finale is Near

Days have passed since you first wound up with those strange mechanical bits in the mail. While all of you have found your respective partners, there’s still the question of “What do we do now?” in regards to the combined pieces. There are a few potential courses of action with the knowledge you have of how magic works here on the island, but the answer may or may not be what you’d expect.

Regardless, things seem to be coming close to wrapping up. For those of you who want it...maybe it’s finally time to return home. For those of you who want to stay, hopefully there's a way to do so. The only way to find the answers to these two things, however, is to start figuring things out.

    Have at it.

(OOC: Welcome to your final log! We will be putting up part 2 at around 6pm EST, depending on how things go, and the final part at around 9pm. Please ping us on Discord if you need anything! Thank you!)

[He gives a little laugh at that.]

I'm glad my skills haven't gone rusty. And...you've been a good friend too, Miles. We've been through some pretty wild stuff here, but it's been a relief to know that you've had my back.

[There's a pause before he speaks up again.]

Hey, can you promise me something?

That depends. What sort of promise?

[He's a lawyer. He's not going to agree to anything sight unseen.]

You're a prosecutor. I want you to do your best to keep the court system from being corrupt. I know you might not have much power over the whole system in general, but even if one person does the right thing...

[Ren shakes his head.]

The justice system fails people too easily. I learned that the hard way, personally. So if you have any power to help people from being wronged, unlawfully accused, or whatever... Please, use it.

That Man(tm)

Ren...

[He sighs.] I wasn't the best prosecutor, once. I won all of my cases, but that was because I'd been taught that winning was everything. It took the reappearance of one man in my life to hand me my first loss, and in so doing he made me begin to question everything I'd been taught as a prosecutor.

He defended me when I was unlawfully accused of murder, and I took a year's leave of absence to learn what being a prosecutor truly meant to me. And to me, it means justice. Logic. Seeking the truth, no matter the cost. It's not about a win record, although some of my colleagues may disagree. It's about finding the true perpetrator of a crime. Testimony may be mistaken, witnesses may lie, but evidence always tells the truth.

[unless it's been forged shhhh sl-9 still fucks him up]

Every case I've taken in the years since then...I've won them fairly when the accused is truly guilty, and lost with grace when they weren't.

Good. Good. Even if it took time for you to get to where you are, the view you have now? That's important. Don't lose sight of that.

[Even Sae had been easily mislead in her desire to get results than really find the truth, so he can't hold any malice towards Miles, considering that he's improved to this point.]

Back home, I was charged for a crime I didn't commit. Aggravated assault, all because I stepped in to stop a drunk man from taking advantage for a woman. He fell on his ass, accused me of attacking him, and. Well. Turns out he was a high ranking politician. He forced the woman to give a false testimony, influenced the court, and I was found guilty. Put on probation. Which got me expelled from my school, and I ended up being shipped off to Tokyo. Ended up in juvie for two and a half months earlier this year thanks to that being on my record and me being on probation, though that's complicated to explain the details of.

Honestly... I don't regret what I did, even if it got me a criminal record. Besides, it kicked off a series of events that made me a Phantom Thief and the person I am today. Even so, there's a part of me that's always going to hold some mistrust for the police and the legal system. I just want to be able to assuage those fears by knowing there's someone somewhere in that whole mess that's doing the right thing. You remind me when it comes to that of a prosecutor I know back home, so having an extra person I can trust is definitely a plus.

[Miles listens somberly. People in power throwing their weight around to accuse others of their own crimes...yes, he knows that, he's seen that. While it's not exactly the same, he's reminded of Redd White.]

You did the right thing. I'm sorry that the justice system failed you for it.

[Then he smiles a bit.]

If you ever have that sort of problem again...I know a good attorney.

You do, huh?

[He smiles back.]

Is that the guy you just mentioned?
