A New Week

This weekend, you had unusual dreams. For some of you, they brought you to an outdoor arena that none of you had ever seen before. For others, you dreamed of a familiar place: a place that felt like home in some way. And when you fall asleep on Sunday night, you’ll find that dreams of your homes are continuing. Your home may be exactly as you remember it, at any point in time before you arrived here; perhaps there will be slight differences, or maybe it seems like a different version of your home altogether. Maybe nobody else is in it except for you.

For each dreamer, however, you’ll find that your dreams will start in your own world; but at some point, there will be a mysterious blue light that appears. It looks like a large portal that will lead you to somewhere. Choose to step inside, and you’ll be taken to a random islander’s dream. Alternatively, if you elect to remain inside of your own dream, you may suddenly see a ray of yellow light that appears, and once the light fades, another one of your fellow islanders will appear before you.

Abilities will work as they did over the weekend in your dreams and in the real world. Everyone will have one of their own, whether it be their existing powers from home or something new entirely. Even the formerly powerless will have something within them -- namely something similar to what the strange boy you saw this weekend could do. Perhaps you now have the ability to launch apples at your opponents at a lightning fast speed. Maybe you can rip a tree out of the ground with your bare hands.

And most importantly...everyone will remember their dreams when they wake. Your memories of seeing your friends’ homes (or seeing them in your home instead) will remain. These dreams seem to happen every night for the rest of the week.

Things do seem to return to relative normalcy on Monday morning. Tom Nook’s announcements begin, though he only has two new things to report.

“Good morning, everyone! I hope you all had a fun weekend, yes? I apologize for not having much for you to do this time around, but hopefully you could all use it as a chance to relax. Now, though, it’s time to get back to work on event planning. I’m hoping to bring K.K. Slider over by August 15th, so if that date does work for all of you to host the event, then that’s when you’ll need to be ready by. Once you’ve all decided on what to do, the other thing I’ll need for you to do is to create flyer designs.

In my tent are some papers and markers, crayons and what have you. It may see a little...childish, for some of you, but I assure you that your creativity will come a long way in capturing the hearts of all sorts of people in this world! Feel free to submit as many designs as you want, and I’ll send them over to Nook Inc. to make copies of all of them. We’ll work with Orville to get them all sent out.”

The next and final announcement follows immediately afterwards.

“And finally, we have an exciting opportunity passed onto me by the Able Sisters! Mabel and Sable are holding a design contest for an Isle Sonrisa pattern to put on some of their clothing! Channel your island spirit into your design and create something that you think best represents the island. You can use the supplies for the flyers to draw out your designs, and submit them to Mabel by Thursday. Everyone will get a participation prize of 5,000 bells, but there will be a grand prize for the person whose design gets selected!”

He claps his hands for a brief moment in excitement.

“That’s all for your announcements! Have a wonderful week, everyone!”

[ Oh, this little robot is cute. The environment was somehow unexpected, but Laurent realizes that it should have been obvious when he realizes whose dream he's in. ]

Hey, little guy. I'm Laurent. Is Serval around?

[The Lucky Beast processes the request with a hum. It bobs -- probably a nod.]

Request for specific Friend. This way. This way.

[It turns around and begins to waddle down the path.]

The serval is a wildcat native to Africa. It is rare in North Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in sub-Saharan countries except rainforest regions. On the IUCN Red List it is listed as Least Concern.

[...apparently, Lucky Beasts double as informational tour guides.]

[ It's nice to have an in-depth tour like this, but it feels like he's at a zoo... and he doesn't really want to treat Serval like an animal in a cage. Nevertheless, he follows Lucky Beast. ]

Does this mean there are more Servals than one?

Multiple Friends of the same species at a time are very uncommon. However, regular animals exist in the park as well.

[There's your answer, I guess. Lucky Beast leads Laurent up a hill, where Serval is napping in a tree. She opens her eyes and waves.]

Oh, hi, Laurent-san! I guess Boss brought you here.

[ Laurent waves back, but... huh. He looks down at Lucky Beast. ]

This thing is your boss?

We all call the Lucky Beasts "Boss." They bring us food, and I think ours called itself a "park guide" once! They don't talk to us, though.

[The little robot turns to tilt its face up toward Laurent.] Our programming prohibits interference with the natural habitat, limiting interaction to humans only unless such danger arises that communication with a Friend is required to protect human staff or visitors.

[Serval sits up in the tree and scratches her head.] I don't really get any of that. But that's okay! It's a lot of fun here.

If you say so--

[ Well... as long as Serval is happy, he supposes that's fine. He can put aside the uneasiness he feels, since other than Isle Sonrisa, he's not used to things being... complacent, though Serval did mention Ceruleans. But they're not here. ]

Do humans not interfere with the natural habitat...?

[ That's... actually amazing?? ]

The Professor says there used to be humans here a long time ago, and they even built Japari Park. They evacuated with all the Friends when the Ceruleans first came, I think. New Friends were born after that, and we just live here.

[ Things look so nice that Laurent didn't even entertain the thought that maybe... this could be a post-apocalyptic scenario. Just how many people are from these sorts of places? He looks down at Lucky Beast, then at Serval. ]

I see. It must be quite comfortable with everyone here like you said...

[ Nothing but plains here. Hm. ]

Oh, right. I think I ate one of those buns you talked about. They were better than I expected.

Yeah, they're really good! The different colours are all different flavours. What kind did you get?

It kinda tasted like... soda, which is weird, since soda is supposed to have flavors of its own.

Was it the ramune flavour? I don't really know what a ramune is, but Kevin-san got that kind in the mail yesterday.

Ramune is a beverage that kinda fizzes when you drink it.

[ He doesn't know if it's any different from soda except it's sold in smaller bottles. ]

Do you think there are some more around here?

[ Can they eat in dreams. ]

Maybe! Usually the Lucky Beasts bring them. They make them in this thing called a "factory," but I've never seen it. Beaver-san has been, though! She lives out at the Lake Shore Area, but that's pretty far from here.

[ Assuming Lucky Beast hasn't gone too far off, Laurent looks over in its direction. ]

It's fine. Maybe it'll have some right now.

[ He waves his hand at Lucky Beast in an attempt to grab its attention. ]

Do you have a bun on you?

I do not. The supply line is far from here. However, refreshments may be obtained at one of the park's many counter service facilities.

I don't really know what it means by that. Maybe it's like Suri Alpaca-san's cafe! She found it on the mountain with everything ready to make tea in, so she learned how to make it at the library and started running the cafe.

[ Laurent blinks while standing there in silence for several seconds. An alpaca started running a cafe...

... ]

It's a little something like that.

[ Serval wouldn't be wrong. ]

Anyway, it's fine. What do you usually do here--other than sleep in trees? There's a lot of space to run around too.

Yeah, I run around a lot, and there's lots of games you can play! We can chase each other around, climb trees, and there's stuff that no one can explain, but it's fun to play with. Like this big wooden thing that has stuff dangling from it, that's fun.

[...a human-sized cat tree.]

Oh, was it like that thing I received a while ago?

[ That... pom pom tree. Thing. ]

Yeah! There are lots of things like that just around. Your home doesn't have them?

We have them for smaller... cats.

[ Since Serval is, well. A cat. A Friend cat. ]

Though I don't own one personally. I had a dog instead of a cat.

What kinds of things do dogs like? I want to know in case I ever meet one.

Attention and affection.

Just remember most like those things in particular.

That's easy! Lots of people like that.

As long as you treat others with decent amount of attention and affection, you'll get far.

[ He thinks Serval has enough energy for that, so honestly... ]

Dogs also like meat if you want to throw them a bone.
