A New Week

This weekend, you had unusual dreams. For some of you, they brought you to an outdoor arena that none of you had ever seen before. For others, you dreamed of a familiar place: a place that felt like home in some way. And when you fall asleep on Sunday night, you’ll find that dreams of your homes are continuing. Your home may be exactly as you remember it, at any point in time before you arrived here; perhaps there will be slight differences, or maybe it seems like a different version of your home altogether. Maybe nobody else is in it except for you.

For each dreamer, however, you’ll find that your dreams will start in your own world; but at some point, there will be a mysterious blue light that appears. It looks like a large portal that will lead you to somewhere. Choose to step inside, and you’ll be taken to a random islander’s dream. Alternatively, if you elect to remain inside of your own dream, you may suddenly see a ray of yellow light that appears, and once the light fades, another one of your fellow islanders will appear before you.

Abilities will work as they did over the weekend in your dreams and in the real world. Everyone will have one of their own, whether it be their existing powers from home or something new entirely. Even the formerly powerless will have something within them -- namely something similar to what the strange boy you saw this weekend could do. Perhaps you now have the ability to launch apples at your opponents at a lightning fast speed. Maybe you can rip a tree out of the ground with your bare hands.

And most importantly...everyone will remember their dreams when they wake. Your memories of seeing your friends’ homes (or seeing them in your home instead) will remain. These dreams seem to happen every night for the rest of the week.

Things do seem to return to relative normalcy on Monday morning. Tom Nook’s announcements begin, though he only has two new things to report.

“Good morning, everyone! I hope you all had a fun weekend, yes? I apologize for not having much for you to do this time around, but hopefully you could all use it as a chance to relax. Now, though, it’s time to get back to work on event planning. I’m hoping to bring K.K. Slider over by August 15th, so if that date does work for all of you to host the event, then that’s when you’ll need to be ready by. Once you’ve all decided on what to do, the other thing I’ll need for you to do is to create flyer designs.

In my tent are some papers and markers, crayons and what have you. It may see a little...childish, for some of you, but I assure you that your creativity will come a long way in capturing the hearts of all sorts of people in this world! Feel free to submit as many designs as you want, and I’ll send them over to Nook Inc. to make copies of all of them. We’ll work with Orville to get them all sent out.”

The next and final announcement follows immediately afterwards.

“And finally, we have an exciting opportunity passed onto me by the Able Sisters! Mabel and Sable are holding a design contest for an Isle Sonrisa pattern to put on some of their clothing! Channel your island spirit into your design and create something that you think best represents the island. You can use the supplies for the flyers to draw out your designs, and submit them to Mabel by Thursday. Everyone will get a participation prize of 5,000 bells, but there will be a grand prize for the person whose design gets selected!”

He claps his hands for a brief moment in excitement.

“That’s all for your announcements! Have a wonderful week, everyone!”

[This dream opens onto an open plain. You can see a few trees, and there's a jungle and mountains in the distance, but the area right here is grasslands with the sun beating down. For the most part, everything is wild and open.

But if you look, you'll find some signs of something else. Large signs that have been worn down for years, their contents illegible. Yellowed pamphlets kept in animal-proof brochure holders. Roads that have long since been taken by overgrowth. It might seem haunting, but the overall feeling in the dream is that this is a happy place and the signs of what a human will see as ruin and decay just come off to the people who live here as something that's always been this way.

You might also find a weird little robot wandering around. If you are visibly human, it will scan you, eyes lighting up, and say:]

Welcome to the Savannah Area. I am Lucky Beast. What is your name?

[But if you're not human in the dream, either kemonomimi or full animal style, the Lucky Beast will just give you a Japari Bun of a random flavour and waddle away.

You can also find Serval, drinking out of a watering hole by putting her face in it. Cat gonna cat. She looks up and waves at you.]

Hi! It's usually pretty busy here, but I guess everyone else drank already.

[Sonico sees Serval and smiles, waiting for her to finish rinking before waving at her.]

hi Serval, is this your home?

Uh-huh! Welcome to Japari Park!

[She gets up from the ground with a wide smile.]

This is the Savannah Area. I spent most of my life here, but there's all sorts of places even just here on Kyoushuu Island!

OH! This is really pretty!

[She looks around, smiling.]

Can you show me your favourite places?

[sugooooooooi]

Sure! Do you like climbing trees? Or running around? Oh, or I bet I could even show you the other areas if we get far enough out! I wonder if the bus is here.

[pinkmacaron]

I do! Running is fun~

[Oh!]

There's a bus?

[sugooooooooi]

Yeah! We found it in the jungle, but it was all broken and we had to fix it up. You know what a bus is? Do you have them too?

[pinkmacaron]

We do! How did you fix the bus?

[sugooooooooi]

We had to get all the pieces back together, but they were on different sides of the river in the Jungle Area. But Kaban-chan figured out how to make a bridge out of these wood things! I think they were broken bridge pieces? And then we had to take out this thing called a battery and do something called "charge" it with the sun. There was a place to do that at Suri Alpaca-san's cafe.

Oh! You learned a lot doing that, right?

[sugooooooooi]

I think so! Kaban-chan's really smart. She always comes up with a solution no matter what.

It's always great to have smart friends! I have one, her name is Suzu, and she's always coming up with new ideas!

That sounds fun! And we've got people like that here, too! Like how Laurent-san always has something new to tell people.

[conceptualize]

[ Oh, this little robot is cute. The environment was somehow unexpected, but Laurent realizes that it should have been obvious when he realizes whose dream he's in. ]

Hey, little guy. I'm Laurent. Is Serval around?

[sugooooooooi]

[The Lucky Beast processes the request with a hum. It bobs -- probably a nod.]

Request for specific Friend. This way. This way.

[It turns around and begins to waddle down the path.]

The serval is a wildcat native to Africa. It is rare in North Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in sub-Saharan countries except rainforest regions. On the IUCN Red List it is listed as Least Concern.

[...apparently, Lucky Beasts double as informational tour guides.]

[ It's nice to have an in-depth tour like this, but it feels like he's at a zoo... and he doesn't really want to treat Serval like an animal in a cage. Nevertheless, he follows Lucky Beast. ]

Does this mean there are more Servals than one?

Multiple Friends of the same species at a time are very uncommon. However, regular animals exist in the park as well.

[There's your answer, I guess. Lucky Beast leads Laurent up a hill, where Serval is napping in a tree. She opens her eyes and waves.]

Oh, hi, Laurent-san! I guess Boss brought you here.

[conceptualize]

[ Laurent waves back, but... huh. He looks down at Lucky Beast. ]

This thing is your boss?

[sugooooooooi]

We all call the Lucky Beasts "Boss." They bring us food, and I think ours called itself a "park guide" once! They don't talk to us, though.

[The little robot turns to tilt its face up toward Laurent.] Our programming prohibits interference with the natural habitat, limiting interaction to humans only unless such danger arises that communication with a Friend is required to protect human staff or visitors.

[Serval sits up in the tree and scratches her head.] I don't really get any of that. But that's okay! It's a lot of fun here.

[conceptualize]

If you say so--

[ Well... as long as Serval is happy, he supposes that's fine. He can put aside the uneasiness he feels, since other than Isle Sonrisa, he's not used to things being... complacent, though Serval did mention Ceruleans. But they're not here. ]

Do humans not interfere with the natural habitat...?

[ That's... actually amazing?? ]

The Professor says there used to be humans here a long time ago, and they even built Japari Park. They evacuated with all the Friends when the Ceruleans first came, I think. New Friends were born after that, and we just live here.

[conceptualize]

[ Things look so nice that Laurent didn't even entertain the thought that maybe... this could be a post-apocalyptic scenario. Just how many people are from these sorts of places? He looks down at Lucky Beast, then at Serval. ]

I see. It must be quite comfortable with everyone here like you said...

[ Nothing but plains here. Hm. ]

Oh, right. I think I ate one of those buns you talked about. They were better than I expected.

[sugooooooooi]

Yeah, they're really good! The different colours are all different flavours. What kind did you get?

[conceptualize]

It kinda tasted like... soda, which is weird, since soda is supposed to have flavors of its own.

[sugooooooooi]

Was it the ramune flavour? I don't really know what a ramune is, but Kevin-san got that kind in the mail yesterday.
