Another Week Goes By

Monday morning comes along. It’s a quiet morning, which is much-needed after such a long island adventure. To anyone walking around the island, you’ll notice two things:

The airport is open, but the seaplane is gone.
Also, there’s a familiar face jogging around the perimeter of the housing portion of the island. That familiar face happens to be none other than the ninja rabbit himself, Snake! Looks like he’s already spending his first day on the island getting in shape!

When Tom Nook calls you all over for morning announcements, he looks pleased with himself. Even Snake comes over to join those who gather to listen to the tanuki. “Good morning, everyone! Let’s all give a warm welcome to our new friend, Snake!”

Cue applause. … Hopefully there is some applause, anyway. Snake grins and just looks very happy to be here.

“Next, I’m pleased to announce that the postal service is now open, since Orville is here to manage mail! You’re able to send individual messages to your fellow residents with gifts attached if you'd like, all handwritten if you’d like, yes. Alternatively, you can redeem what are called Nook Miles for items now -- they’re essentially a rewards system, and you can track your rewards on the Nook Miles app on your phone.”

“Essentially, the app will automatically award you for every contribution you add to the island, whether it be decorating your house, harvesting fruit, pulling weeds -- you name it! You can then turn in those Nook Miles at the airport, and that’s how we’ll be delivering items to you in the mail from now on.”

That’ll have the mail system make more sense, at least! Now it’s all on you if you decide to end up with 40 items in the mail all at once.

“The last announcement I have to make is that we’re going to make a second housing plot! The first one was a success, what with Snake moving in, and I’m grateful for Wilbur and Orville’s efforts in helping us build our island. So...with that, I need the following items for the next house:

1 Ironwood Table
2 Ironwood Dressers
1 Ironwood Clock
2 Ironwood Chairs

And just like last week, if nobody on the island has the DIY for these, I will send over the DIYs to your apps.”

He pauses, and then he looks a little...sheepish at this next announcement. “Now, I’m aware that some of you have been building bridges — and now that you all have vaulting poles and ladders, there are untouched parts of the island for you to explore. I’d like to ask you all to consider creating areas outside, such as an exercise area, perhaps even a park of sorts — though we will have someone coming in soon who may need some space.

Finally, this is just a request -- if you have any fossils, bugs, or fish, do turn them in to Blathers! He's very close to hitting his goal before we can open up a museum, so keep that in mind.”

He raises his hand, as if to end the morning announcements. “That’s all for today!”

Possible Objectives

1. Help Tom Nook prepare a housing plot for the second villager house!
2. Get Nook Miles to redeem items at the post office at the airport.
3. Help Blathers by catching and donating specimens.
4. Decorate and explore the untouched part of the island (see locations page; it’s the left hand area)

NOTE: Nook Miles are not a new mechanic and are simply an IC way to justify the rewards system, now! You don't need to keep track of points; just assume the threads you turn in are characters redeeming points for items.

[Thinking...]

I don't think so? I mean, foxes and dogs and stuff don't have problem with water...

[ Laurent gets up, walks over to the top of the cliff where the waterfall begins and looks down. It's not so high, but it's not low either. ]

I'll be going first then.

[ Yet, he doesn't move. ]

Scared?

[She pushes herself to her feet, raising an eyebrow and stepping up to stand next to Laurent.]

It's okay if you are.

Not exactly. Just gauging if I might have to be carried away by someone if there's an accident.

[ Hm... well, it looks okay. He's crossed the river before, but it should be good enough. Laurent tosses his shoes down the cliff and walks into the river near the waterfall, letting himself be guided by the current and--splash.

...

It takes several seconds, but Laurent looks up at Adelaide after getting water out of his face. ]

It might hurt a little.

[ He's calling up to her. ]

C'mon, it won't be that bad!

[And then he's off. Adelaide kicks off her flip flops after a moment, before following suit.

She seems to be enjoying it, at least, if the way she laughs once she splashes into the pool is any indication.]

It didn't hurt at all!

[ Laurent laughs as he wipes his face again from the water splash. ]

Maybe I just had bad luck in landing.

[ This is a guy who can lift people, but can't use a vaulting pole to save his life. ]

But it feels nice and cool. Definitely beats the sun any day.

[It’s very tempting to swipe her arms through the water and splash him, but she resists.

For now.]

Probably.

[She sinks down into the water, laying on her back.]

It feels like summer vacation as a kid.

[ Do it, Adelaide. Do it. Laurent just stands on his knees from where he is so that his feet can recover from the landing and that the water level doesn't consume him. ]

Yeah? Tell me more about your summer vacation when you were a kid.

[She spreads her arms, splashing a bit. Not enough to hit Laurent, but Soon.]

Most of them were pretty unmemorable...

[Or downright unpleasant.]

But there was one summer I stayed with my aunt...

[She pauses.]

Well. I don’t know if you’d believe me.

[ Laurent finds it funny that Adelaide is saying that, considering their current situation. ]

Lay it on me. I'll listen.

I met a mermaid.

[She pauses, waiting for Laurent’s reaction.]

Was it the innocent kind or the siren kind?

[ Would Adelaide be wooed by a siren...

Laurent just naturally goes with the conversation as if mermaids are the obvious outcome. ]

[She thinks on this for a moment...]

I wouldn’t say she was the siren kind, not really... But I think she did eat people sometimes?

[She didn’t ask but them chompers...]

[ The nomnom mermaid... Laurent thinks about this. Adelaide is here right now, so she was safe from the mermaid... or something like that. ]

Was she a nice one? If so, did you become friends?

[You never know, Adelaide does have a lot of scars...]

Heh. We dated for a little bit before I had to go back home.

[More gentle splashing.]

She was my first girlfriend. Only girlfriend. Only person I've ever dated, really...

A short, sweet summer romance... did you have a nice time? What did you do? Did you make nice memories? I'm curious, since I've never met a mermaid, let alone hear somebody date one.

[ Tell him your story... ]

It was pretty nice... We got along well, and we still talk sometimes even though it's been years. I think she met a surfer and started dating her? It kind of sounded like that, at least. I'm happy for her.

[She looks up the clouds, thoughtful for a moment.]

I didn't know mermaids were real, until I met her. I thought they were just stories, you know? But she was real, and she was nice to me, and she actually kind of gave a shit about me, and it was a nice break from how things usually were.

[ Laurent also looks up at the sky and then back down at Adelaide. That sounds nice, but also concerning. ]

Do people not usually care about you?

[There's a long, quiet moment, where Adelaide realizes she might have said too much.

After a while, she lets out a gusty sigh.]

Mm... Not really, I guess.

[ Laurent is quiet during the long moment until Adelaide speaks. Laurent is a loner, despite how many people he's surrounded by. It's never really something he lamented, but he feels like he can somewhat understand Adelaide's feelings. ]

[She pushes herself up right, finding a shallow spot in the pool to sit so her head is at least above the water.]

My parents were shitty, I was the weird kid in high school who couldn't hang out outside of class or practice, and college... Well. I didn't stick it out for very long, so who knows what kind of friends I could have made.

[ Laurent looks at the water as he listens. He glances up at her and his gaze stays. ]

Hey, Adelaide... Do you want to go back? Back home.

[...Ah. That's a good question. Not one she's sure she wants to answer, but she's also not sure she has an answer. Her life turned around, sure, but...]

...I have a business to run.

[Which...is not a yes or a no, which is probably telling enough.]

[ It is, and it makes Laurent smile just a little. Though whether that's his usual smile or something that conveys a different emotion... well, it's hard to tell from how cryptic it is. ]

Yeah, I suppose you do. It sounds like you have a strong sense of responsibility. And I think that's admirable.

[ But. But. ]

So, before you go back, let's make a lot of nice memories here with people who care about you.

I guess so...

[Responsibility, obligation, all the same thing, really.

She looks over at Laurent with a soft smile.]

Are you saying you care about me, Laurent.]
