The Move-In

You’ve spent the week adjusting to island life by getting to know one another, figuring out what to do with all those presents, gathering your resources and selling them off to Tom Nook. The weekend is finally here, though, and that’s something to celebrate!

...But when you wake up on Saturday, whenever that may be, the environment you’re in is not the tent you remember falling asleep in. Rather, you’re inside of some kind of house with a white wall and ceiling, wood lined across the bottom of the walls. The floor is wood, too, shiny and glossy as the sun rays shine through the one window in your house. Whatever you had lying out in your tents is still arranged in the same general order you had your things in before. Furthermore, you’re still lying on your camping cots with the same people who fell asleep in the tent with you, but if you decide to get up and investigate, you’ll find two other rooms other than the one you’re in.

Facing the door from the inside, if you look to your left, you’ll find...a bathroom! It’s got a basic toilet, sink, and a bathtub with a showerhead for you to use. There are also enough bath towels for each person hanging on a towel rack. The walls are white but the floor in here is tiled instead of wooden. The room across the bathroom, however, is empty. It has the same wallpaper and flooring as the main room you found yourself in.

It’s a small, comfy place you’re staying in, but the real question is… When did this happen? Only one way to find out.

And sure enough, if you’re awake by nine AM, Tom Nook will rally everyone to Resident Services for his morning announcements.

“Good morning, everyone, and welcome to your first weekend on Isle Sonrisa! As you’ve all probably already noticed by now, we were able to upgrade your tents last night into houses! Don’t worry, there is no fee for this upgrade -- but now you finally have a place where you can decorate your house with all the furniture you were able to get in the mail. For any excess items you may have… Might I suggest a yard sard of some sort, hm?”

He tilts his head a little. He thinks this is a good idea!

“Alternatively, houses all come with storage. There’s a small little storage shed in the back of everyone’s houses that can fit many, many items. If you don’t want to sell your items to me or hand them off to someone else, you can store them inside of there.”

Tom Nook nods his head. “Yes, yes. I’d like to suggest that you all take this weekend to decide how to arrange the items you’ve gotten in the mail...and one more thing about those items: You can put them outside, too. For example, oh, an exercise area might be nice…” He sounds a little wistful when he says it, but promptly shakes his head afterwards.

“Ah-! Before I forget...erm… It seems as though one of our friends has unexpectedly left the island. We don’t know where or how he left, you see...but Heimdall is no longer here. We’re still working on figuring out a way to send you all home, and we’re trying to track him down, too.”

He looks very guilty about that, at least. But the moment passes, and he perks up again, smiling at everyone as best as he can. “Alright, that’s it! You can spend the weekend however you’d like to, but with your new homes being built and all the furniture some of you have received, well… It may be a good idea to work on that, no?”

[ Just to keep himself busy at the start of their day, Kim Dokja decided to do more crafting after having taken a quick trip around. This time he made a swinging bench which he's placed outside house two. Once that's done he decides to take a seat and start skimming through the NookPhone.

..It would be nice if he could pass some time reading. Looking at all the apps currently added but only seeing the same thing. After skimming the network comments he sets the phone down with a small yawn before he starts to drift off and eventually falls asleep.

Technically Dokja has been getting better about resting more but he lost a few hours of sleep last night again. ]

[ Joonghyuk returns home from a gathering session and notices that there's a new item near their house... And Dokja is just resting outside like that's safe. His shoulders drop as he deposits the items next to the bench then takes a seat.

He doesn't say anything. Just here to rest and drink some water from his canister. The sky might not be clear, but the warmth is nice? ]

[ There's no telling how long he's been asleep. Five minutes? Ten minutes? All Dokja knows is, by the time he wakes up, he notices someone is next to him. Ears wiggle a little until he realizes who it is and slowly relaxes. Good thing he's put behind everything that happened on Friday. Who's thinking about it? Definitely not him. ]

..Finished already? [ He stretches just a bit, trying to chase away the groggy feeling of waking up before the bench starts to swing lightly with a notion of his legs swinging a bit. ] I had some wood to spare so I figured I'd make something.

[ Read: He was.. bored. ]

[ Joonghyuk idly pushes them back and forth with one leg, enjoying the small swings. He would usually consider this as a waste of resources, but with everything aplenty, they should try to make what they can to make things comfortable. ]

I didn't consider you a handyman.

[ To be honest, he only though Dokja knew how to fight and read novels. That's pretty much it? Also knows how to calm down kids. ]

[ It's a bit of a funny scene. The two of them swinging lightly like this, enough to make him chuckle a little. Since there was a few younger arrivals he figured it was a good idea. Besides, getting around to crafting some of the things he's able to was an interesting insight in how DIYs worked. ]

Wasn't much of a cook either but I did help a little with your preparations.

[ Which is to say that he's been branching out and doing a few things he isn't use to doing while here. Before all he did was read novels, then through the Scenarios he learned to fight, learned how to do.. a lot of things. His tail curls around him, closest to the side where Joonghyuk sits next to him as the ends of it lightly sways. Technically speaking, Kim Dokja has grown quite a lot from the man he once was. ]

It doesn't take a cook to prepare ingredients.

[ But... A lot of cooks when they first get into the field start with prepwork only then work their way up to actually cooking. If only he could have seen Dokja craft it, then he would take back any awe he had about the other man making something like this.

DIYs are a cheat. ]

What are your plans today?

..Right.

[ ..Stuffs hands into pockets. It's fine now, but he may have gotten a cut or two in his attempts to peel the day before. Then again he's gotten plenty of light scars by now with the amount of battles they've been in so what's another? Anyways, he won't complain with the misjudged praise even though it feels weird.

His head tilts at the question, one ear flicking to the distant whooosh~ sound. ]

Mmmm. Not sure. I was thinking of seeing Laurent tomorrow since I heard he can make actual decent beds, but I was gonna finish some more gathering resources today before that. Otherwise, I didn't plan much out. [ He glances over, tail that was idly still in thought starting to swish a little again. ] You?

[ A bed sounds good. ]

I was just going to gather more in preparation. Since resources replenish very fast on the island, we should make sure to collect everything when they're ready.

[ As they saw with his garden, it has been growing every three days... And he has been considering expanding it. Closing his eyes, he leans against his side of the bench, tail flicking back and forth while he thinks. ]

Some gardening.

Ah, right. Every three days.

[ Dokja voices out those inner thoughts, quickly understanding. If they don't keep on top of the gathering then they might miss out on a harvest day. He quietly mulls over the details. ]

Tom Nook should be bringing in the requested ingredients tomorrow too so.. it's a good time to garden. [ He spies an innocent balloon finally coming into view in the sky, that telltale whooosh~ still echoing back. Should they get it? ]

Do you want my help? [ This time he doesn't look at Yoo Joonghyuk as he asks, keeping his gaze leveled on the balloon. ]

You decide what you want to do. [ Which means he won't ask him for help, but he won't reject it if he follows him. ] I didn't request any extra vegetables, but an assortment of condiments.

[ Joonghyuk's ear also flickers to the sound of a passing by balloon. He looks up to it with some curiosity in his eyes.

They should definitely get it. ]

Ideally, we should be using high grade seeds, but this world seems germinate grocery store vegetables more than normal.

[ ... ]

Do you have a slingshot?

That's fine, since it seems like a lot of people requested some good things. It'll widen the field of meals we can start having from now on.

[ He's relieved. It means they can stop using apples for some time to come, he's tired of apples.

The balloon sways unceremoniously in the air, coming closer into their view with encouragement. Will it be an item? Or a DIY? He's curious. ]

Yeah.

[ ... ]

I do not. [ Hmm. ] I have an apple though.

[ He squints out at the balloon, if he aims it.. here.. then... whoosh! There goes the apple, flying up to the balloon above them. Now, is the apple gonna drop on his head or the present? Maybe it's both. ]

[ The present will drop towards Dokja's head. When he unwraps it though, he'll find a Fancy Violin! ]

[ Unfortunately, yeah. Joonghyuk has been making weird varieties of food with apples, though with fish and the vegetables provided to them it's been better. His tail wags a big hanging off the bench, watching the apple fly and somehow?

Somehow??? Pop the balloon? Are these balloons so frail? Joonghyuk can only catch one of the two since he expects Dokja to get the other.

So that apple is his. ]

[ Guess who was also aiming for the apple only to see that Yoo Joonghyuk caught it.

Which means.. ] ..Guh!

[ The present smacking him right atop his head before plopping innocently in front of them. He rubs at his head, feeling tears stinging his eyes but he blinks away to curiously open said present. Let's see, what could it... be...?

Oh. He stares at the fancy violin. ] ..Might make some bells off it at least.

[ Joonghyuk is glad that Dokja failed to catch the present. A fool. An idiot. He doesn't smile or anything, but he's content to see that. ]

... Musical instruments are expensive. [ So he thinks so? ] You've been lucky here.

[ Fuck you. ]

I was pretty lucky back home too. [ Which, thinking on it now, makes sense. He grows quiet at that as he stares at the item. Eventually he puts it away, reclining back onto the swinging bench. ]

Have you gotten any specific items? I'm talking about something that may seem familiar on a different level to others. I ended up getting a stuffed cat, remember? Apparently it was Sonica's cat from home but in a plush form.

[ He doesn’t want to talk about why you were lucky back at home... it makes him sad and also angry, so he doesn’t say anything. Point is, Dokja is treated well here outside of his own threats to kill him. As it should be.

The bench continues to swing with every small push Joonghyuk makes... The light, soft creaking is the only sound as Joonghyuk thinks about it. ]

I received a recorder. [ ... ] It seemed used.

There hasn’t been any mention of our items appearing yet.

[ Despite the cloudy weather, it really is quite warm. He's getting sleepy again. Especially the way the warmth drapes on the fur of his ears and tail. With the added rocks of the bench? He feels like a small child being rocked to bed.

Ears twitch at the mention because it's an item he hasn't heard of yet from his companion. ] A recorder? ..I can't imagine who it belongs to. You should try mentioning it on the network.

[ His tail curls back over to Joonghyuk's side to lightly tap against. ] I can't imagine our blades being sent in the mail. Maybe our coats? Since we didn't arrive with them.

... I saw a couch come out of Laurent's mailbox.

[ So, like, he doesn't think it's unlikely for their blades to be sent through the mail. Couches shouldn't be sent that way, either. Joonghyuk doesn't watch Dokja fall asleep, instead merely looking out at the peaceful island. It's been a whole week and nothing has happened yet aside from houses being built overnight.

It makes him anxious. Advertising the recorder on the network, though. He doesn't seem keen? His tail bats against Dokja's accidentally. ]

It's annoying. [ He doesn't want to interact with people via network!! ] I'll do it later.

[ Dokja heard of that incident from Laurent himself. Granted, he remembers seeing in the distance of another person drowning in their mail as it all came rushing out. He's been careful with his own mail so it hasn't happened yet. But, he's also never had a couch delivered to him.

An ankle raises to hook around his other, slightly crossing his own legs as he spies the clouds coming into view. Not lucky enough for another balloon to peek but the silence that fills in-between their words makes him shift a bit. He wonders, were he home if it would be easier? It must be.

He side eyes him at the bat but otherwise listens to him, his tail flopping once before smacking back and just dropping over his companion's after. Something done subconsciously as he focuses on his words. ] It means something to someone. [ In which case means they would owe you one for returning it. Do it soon, you brat. ]

[ Joonghyuk scowls when Dokja's tail outright offends him. He doesn't say anything, but his tail strategically slips out under the other man's then drapes over it. How it should be. Looking away, he huffs. ]

I'll do it tomorrow. [ Get off his back. There. An immediate date. Are you happy? ] ... How do you feel about the island?

[ Dokja seems to be in better shape than usual, maybe even better than back at home. Joonghyuk is pleased by the sight, though also taken aback by how... A good life is something they both needed. ]

[ Joonghyuk doesn't say anything, an ear flicking once as Dokja takes this in before said tail tugs itself from under that sleek black tail to plop right on back over it again. Done. ]

Alright. [ Lips twitch as he sees him look away, amused. Though the question draws his attention back in front of him. How does he feel..... ]

When our world changed, I didn't question whether it was real or not. Here, it feels like...

[ A dream. ]

[ He shakes his head, peeking back at him. ] What about you?

[ Nope. His tail is going to stack on top of Dokja right after he tries to one-up him again. ]

... The world after the scenarios.

[ Joonghyuk turns his head to look straight ahead, trying to compare what he sees to what he last remembers. ]

It is almost perfect.

[ He doesn't say it, but it's obvious he misses. The almost part if, of course, because Dokja isn't there yet. Nothing can compare to home, in the end. ]

It is pleasant here.

[ A light huff. Joonghyuk is being strangely stubborn about it but this time his tail only wiggles slightly underneath where it lays trapped by the black tail. ]

... [ Almost. His head tilts, one ear flickering again. Of course while it wasn't ideal, it's as close as it'll be once they return home. He knows Yoo Joonghyuk won't be satisfied by it. He's already expressed as such regarding Dokja's situation. ]

A world-line focused on a peaceful life living on an island. [ He hums a little. ] I almost wouldn't mind.

[ Joonghyuk was always stubborn, but at times it’s even more obvious. Like now. His tail rests on Dokja’s, finding the poofy white fur to be a nice cushion. Joonghyuk keeps his eyes at the sea that is a bit further off in front of them. It’s still close enough to see and experience the breeze.

This isn’t home, but there are things here that aren’t at home... Like the man beside him and the vast blue waters ahead. ]

We should buy a vacation house by the beach.

[ When they return home and resolve what needs to be resolved. A vacation house on an island or just by the shore sounds nice. ]
