Another Week Goes By

Monday morning comes along. It’s a quiet morning, which is much-needed after such a long island adventure. To anyone walking around the island, you’ll notice two things:

The airport is open, but the seaplane is gone.
Also, there’s a familiar face jogging around the perimeter of the housing portion of the island. That familiar face happens to be none other than the ninja rabbit himself, Snake! Looks like he’s already spending his first day on the island getting in shape!

When Tom Nook calls you all over for morning announcements, he looks pleased with himself. Even Snake comes over to join those who gather to listen to the tanuki. “Good morning, everyone! Let’s all give a warm welcome to our new friend, Snake!”

Cue applause. … Hopefully there is some applause, anyway. Snake grins and just looks very happy to be here.

“Next, I’m pleased to announce that the postal service is now open, since Orville is here to manage mail! You’re able to send individual messages to your fellow residents with gifts attached if you'd like, all handwritten if you’d like, yes. Alternatively, you can redeem what are called Nook Miles for items now -- they’re essentially a rewards system, and you can track your rewards on the Nook Miles app on your phone.”

“Essentially, the app will automatically award you for every contribution you add to the island, whether it be decorating your house, harvesting fruit, pulling weeds -- you name it! You can then turn in those Nook Miles at the airport, and that’s how we’ll be delivering items to you in the mail from now on.”

That’ll have the mail system make more sense, at least! Now it’s all on you if you decide to end up with 40 items in the mail all at once.

“The last announcement I have to make is that we’re going to make a second housing plot! The first one was a success, what with Snake moving in, and I’m grateful for Wilbur and Orville’s efforts in helping us build our island. So...with that, I need the following items for the next house:

1 Ironwood Table
2 Ironwood Dressers
1 Ironwood Clock
2 Ironwood Chairs

And just like last week, if nobody on the island has the DIY for these, I will send over the DIYs to your apps.”

He pauses, and then he looks a little...sheepish at this next announcement. “Now, I’m aware that some of you have been building bridges — and now that you all have vaulting poles and ladders, there are untouched parts of the island for you to explore. I’d like to ask you all to consider creating areas outside, such as an exercise area, perhaps even a park of sorts — though we will have someone coming in soon who may need some space.

Finally, this is just a request -- if you have any fossils, bugs, or fish, do turn them in to Blathers! He's very close to hitting his goal before we can open up a museum, so keep that in mind.”

He raises his hand, as if to end the morning announcements. “That’s all for today!”





Possible Objectives

1. Help Tom Nook prepare a housing plot for the second villager house!
2. Get Nook Miles to redeem items at the post office at the airport.
3. Help Blathers by catching and donating specimens.
4. Decorate and explore the untouched part of the island (see locations page; it’s the left hand area)

NOTE: Nook Miles are not a new mechanic and are simply an IC way to justify the rewards system, now! You don't need to keep track of points; just assume the threads you turn in are characters redeeming points for items.

[ There are easier, more efficient ways to check if someone is made of cake. Okay? ]

Of course he doesn't.

[ Laurent is starting to understand Joonghyuk will never be able to take a joke. He keeps watching Snake struggle with the barbell. Well, if he wants to keep doing it, he won't stop him. ]

Even if he was, I'd welcome the cake residents. They're pretty harmless, which is something I'd be reluctant to say about the original batch of foreigners on this island.

[ ... Are you talking about him, Laurent? He has been well-behaved...? Hasn't even threatened Tom Nook for his life yet? ]

They seem happy.

[ Unlike them. ]

[conceptualize]

Are you saying you're not happy?

[ That may be asking for the obvious, but asking it directly might feel different. ]

[ That's a very complicated question. He's relieved and glad to see Dokja around, even if he saw his face not too long after he was brought here. ]

One day, I will be as happy as them.

[ Snake seems to be bright and cheerful despite struggling, after all. ]

Really? I think that would be a sight to see.

[ Since he always sees Joonghyuk as grumpy or something similar. ]

It's too bad I won't be around to see it.

[ Joonghyuk's expression twists from confusion... and just confusion. ]

Why would you want to see it?

[ That's weird. ]

[ Laurent just laughs because Joonghyuk's expression is so funny... sorry yjh. ]

Because a genuine, happy smile means more from someone who barely does it in the first place.

[ In contrast to him, who's always smiles. ]

... We barely know each other.

[ So he doesn't see what value that has. Sure, it's nice, but watching flowers bloom is nice in the same sense. ]

So?

[ This is where their values differ, but Laurent doesn't bother clarifying. ]

Even so, the days when you no longer smile will eventually come to an end, since you're such a hopeful guy.

[ There's a remark that sits on his tongue to convey that Laurent is strange, but instead: ]

... You should worry about smiling genuinely yourself.

[conceptualize]

Oh, you don't think I'm genuinely smiling when I'm laughing at you, Joonghyuk? You're a funny guy, after all.

[ Yeah.

Yeah... ]

[ Joonghyuk merely stares at him in silence, this time not at all irritated or riled up from his words. ]

[conceptualize]

[ With Joonghyuk's reaction, or lack thereof, he's starting to think there's some resistance that he's building up or that was rather weak to begin with. ]

Loosen up, mister stoic. At this rate, you really will get wrinkles on your face.

As the End, I'll fully support your journey to happiness.

[ He doesn't feel like thanking him... There are plenty of people who wanted to see the end of their story, but he can't help but feel. Something. It's warm and reminds him that not everyone can take happiness.

It reminds him he's fortunate despite the amount of lives he's lived. ]

Is that the path you've chosen for yourself?

You'll have to be more direct if you want to ask questions, Joonghyuk.

[ Even if he speaks the language of vague, he might consider answering it depending on his whimsy. ]

To be the End.

[ The happiness part he has nothing to say about. People love stories, after all. ]

[ Hm.

Hm...

He decides to finally throw him a bone. ]

No, it wasn't. What kind of normal person would happily accept that sort of thing?

[ That's a simple question, isn't it? ]

Someone who has no joy in life and also hates their world.

[ Laurent can only smile. As expected, the association with end is only negative, so that couldn't be helped. Perhaps it's also because of how Joonghyuk's mind is so fixated on survival in Laurent's opinion. ]

As you know, things are never simple.

[ He doesn't accept nor deny his claim. ]

Think outside the box a little.

[ The end is a very big thing where he comes from. It's a difference between the apocalypse and an epilogue. ]

Not quite there yet.

[ Laurent doesn't look at Joonghyuk. Instead, it looks like he's staring at Snake, who's still struggling, but he doesn't feel like he's looking at anything at all. ]

Besides, I already told you the answer, didn't I? I didn't choose the path.

People who take power have greed. Power can change your life and your way of living. If there's nothing they wanted to change, then why would they want it?

[ Anyway, he was answering in a general sense. He knows too many people who would sign contracts if that meant they can survive—if they can change. ]

Are you going to accept that?

Perhaps, rather than wanting it, they had no choice but to take it, since it was already theirs without their knowledge. Surely, the way of living would change and whatever was the former life would no longer be, but consider who gives these sort of "powers" never cared about the recipient despite forcing it on them.

[ Only that they were merely "fitting" their unknown criteria--but Laurent doesn't say that, because he doesn't want Joonghyuk to think those earlier guesses were right. ]

[ Laurent, to be honest, confirms most of his suspicions, but he doesn't voice it. There's no reason to. ]

You don't need to live the life someone else gave you.
