Another Week Goes By

Monday morning comes along. It’s a quiet morning, which is much-needed after such a long island adventure. To anyone walking around the island, you’ll notice two things:

The airport is open, but the seaplane is gone.
Also, there’s a familiar face jogging around the perimeter of the housing portion of the island. That familiar face happens to be none other than the ninja rabbit himself, Snake! Looks like he’s already spending his first day on the island getting in shape!

When Tom Nook calls you all over for morning announcements, he looks pleased with himself. Even Snake comes over to join those who gather to listen to the tanuki. “Good morning, everyone! Let’s all give a warm welcome to our new friend, Snake!”

Cue applause. … Hopefully there is some applause, anyway. Snake grins and just looks very happy to be here.

“Next, I’m pleased to announce that the postal service is now open, since Orville is here to manage mail! You’re able to send individual messages to your fellow residents with gifts attached if you'd like, all handwritten if you’d like, yes. Alternatively, you can redeem what are called Nook Miles for items now -- they’re essentially a rewards system, and you can track your rewards on the Nook Miles app on your phone.”

“Essentially, the app will automatically award you for every contribution you add to the island, whether it be decorating your house, harvesting fruit, pulling weeds -- you name it! You can then turn in those Nook Miles at the airport, and that’s how we’ll be delivering items to you in the mail from now on.”

That’ll have the mail system make more sense, at least! Now it’s all on you if you decide to end up with 40 items in the mail all at once.

“The last announcement I have to make is that we’re going to make a second housing plot! The first one was a success, what with Snake moving in, and I’m grateful for Wilbur and Orville’s efforts in helping us build our island. So...with that, I need the following items for the next house:

1 Ironwood Table
2 Ironwood Dressers
1 Ironwood Clock
2 Ironwood Chairs

And just like last week, if nobody on the island has the DIY for these, I will send over the DIYs to your apps.”

He pauses, and then he looks a little...sheepish at this next announcement. “Now, I’m aware that some of you have been building bridges — and now that you all have vaulting poles and ladders, there are untouched parts of the island for you to explore. I’d like to ask you all to consider creating areas outside, such as an exercise area, perhaps even a park of sorts — though we will have someone coming in soon who may need some space.

Finally, this is just a request -- if you have any fossils, bugs, or fish, do turn them in to Blathers! He's very close to hitting his goal before we can open up a museum, so keep that in mind.”

He raises his hand, as if to end the morning announcements. “That’s all for today!”





Possible Objectives

1. Help Tom Nook prepare a housing plot for the second villager house!
2. Get Nook Miles to redeem items at the post office at the airport.
3. Help Blathers by catching and donating specimens.
4. Decorate and explore the untouched part of the island (see locations page; it’s the left hand area)

NOTE: Nook Miles are not a new mechanic and are simply an IC way to justify the rewards system, now! You don't need to keep track of points; just assume the threads you turn in are characters redeeming points for items.

This world is generous, likewise their residents. They seem to enjoy receiving and giving.

[ Like the house? The supplies... But maybe Joonghyuk just isn't used to kindness. He continues to hold the candle, looking down at it and thinks some more. ]

But it's possible there's ruin elsewhere.

[ This world might be generous, but the universe is often cruel and mocking in it's wonder, and Minato can't bring himself to think that any of this is right. ]

It's too good to be true... I can't help but think that. That Snake and anybody living alone on an island are refugees. That if this were genuinely a mistake and our departure taken seriously, we'd be taken off this island already. Under protection of some government, if one exists.

[ What are they all still doing here? The plane works, can leave the barrier, and multiple trips to carry everyone is only a minor inconvenience. ]

[ Joonghyuk agrees that this is all too strange. The peaceful lulls don't ever feel right, but he also considers where he is in his own story. The anxiety of leaving an important task at home, where things aren't so bright, still haunts him.

Let him put the candle into his pocket first. His pants do not light on fire for some reason. ]

I can't deny that there may be a world like this. [ A nice, happy one. There are so many and he has seen plenty. ] Their grievances may seem small to us, but it's still very real.

[ Thinking. ]

Our summoning may be due to powers above the residents' control.

[compendiem]

[ What grievances. Minato shakes his head— not to disagree, but because he has to remind himself that everybody has grievances, big and small, and just because they're not comparable to the end of the world as he knows it doesn't mean they're not still valid. Waking up with a bad hair day. Finding a weed in your carefully cultivated flowerbed. They're all still very real, and he has no right to dismiss them. ]

Do you think it's something we can fight off?

[ Even if it's something like a god, though, if it never shows its face, they will never be able to fight it. More and more, it feels like the inevitability of succumbing to Death. ]

[regression]

[ Joonghyuk stays quiet, thinking about it. As he is now? He would probably die if he tried to fight any of the gods from his world. If everyone else has been stripped of their abilities, too... He won't sugarcoat it. ]

No, but that won't stop me. [ That's his decision, though he can only speak for himself. ] What will you do?

[compendiem]

[ All Minato can do is shrug. At the crux of it, he doesn't know, and he can't know. ]

Hope it's something I can fight.

[ Even if it's a god, even if it kills him, he would put that on the table if it means getting home, for the one month he has left with his friends. ]

In the meantime... I'm going to make do with what I have. This place gave me wings. I'm going to learn how to use them.

[ Joonghyuk's tail sways as he takes in Minato's appearance. It is a little weird, but he's used to Dokja transforming into a demon king with horns and wings. ]

Flight will give you an advantage against whatever we may need to face. [ ... ] We'll find a way home somehow.

[ That is the one thing he can at least guarantee. People are waiting for them, after all. ]

Are you planning to train now?

[compendiem]

[ The guarantee doesn't do much to instill Minato with hope, unable to drum up as much confidence himself, but he can believe in Joonghuyk's intentions if not his promise. ]

I've been trying, sort of. I can control the wings a lot better now, and can glide if I can get up high to begin with. It's just the strength required to propel myself back up. I'm not there yet.

[ That's good enough, to be honest. He listens to the hurdles Minato faces and strokes his own chin, pensive. ]

Then you need strength training. [ Staring him down— ] Do you also have the stamina?

Uh.

[ He's not sure he likes that stare. ]

I used to do a lot of running, climbing stairs, swinging swords, that sorta thing, but less once I came here. Can fight as if my life depended on it for about an hour, but after that, my body shuts down and I got sick often if I pushed myself like that.

[ aka he has the stamina if held at gunpoint, but otherwise, it's something he can stand to work on too. ]

An hour is long. [ At least when Joonghyuk considers what most people go through. ] But birds fly for much longer.

[ He does frown at the body shuts down and getting sick, though. Then he thinks back to when Minato asked him about edible bugs and weeds. ]

You need to eat well.

[ Minato was imagining a Flappy Bird scenario where he doesn't have to fly for an hour straight, only long enough to get some height and then glide for a while before repeating the process. But even that little spurt of flight's going to take more strength than he has right now, and while he isn't starving, his diet is sort of... junk... ]

I guess I need to work on that... I'll add more milk to my coffee. And veggies to my instant ramen.

[ The body has to be ready to keep the arms out for so long, too. Unless that's Minato's usual pose. Milk in coffee is all right, he supposes. The last one has him cock an eyebrow. ]

How often do you have instant ramen...

[ He has a guess, but? Maybe? ]

[ Just to clarify before he gives a proper answer. ]

[ Hm... ]

Per week.

...Fourteen. On average.

[ LOOK it's not as bad as it could be, and he's also supplementing his diet with breakfast coffee, also lunchtime coffee, and evening coffee as long as Ren hasn't gone to bed yet. ]

It's something I can make by myself without bothering people to cook.

[ Fourteen? Not as bad? Joonghyuk grimaces at that number. ]

I'm surprised you haven't gotten an ulcer. [ Jesus. ] Why don't you learn how to cook?

Why...? Food in the grocery store is perfectly fine. Money's not a problem. And I don't have any special dietary concerns...

[ It's just easier to walk into the store and grab a pack of takoyaki and throw it into the microwave. ]

If you don't take care of your body and change your eating habits, it will show.

[ He understands convenience is nice, but... Health? ]

[compendiem]

... It already does.

[ He's short, skinny, gets sick so easily and so often, and knows he has himself to blame for that. Maybe also genes, but mostly himself. ]

It didn't matter, when I was never supposed to live past seven... When I never thought I'd be standing here at seventeen. There was no point in taking care of myself.

[regression]

[ Hey. Minato could be a growing boy if he lived long enough?! Anyway, Joonghyuk understands that kind of thinking. When life is numbered why exert more effort? But he thinks about it a bit more. ]

... It would be a burden to those who care about you. [ He thinks that's simple enough. ] Come with me.

[ To Snake's house. They're going to go exercise. ]

[ Can't be a burden to anybody if nobody cares about you!!! ]

Where are we going?

[ But he follows after Joonghyuk just the same. ]

[ Minato!!! People care about you!!! ]

We're picking someone up.

[ They're at Snake's house and Snake conveniently comes out of his house right then. He waves to both of them!! Then asks if they're here to jog around the island.

This is what Minato signed up for (except he didn't). ]

[ Wow! Minato turns around to leave. ]

[ Snake! Is so excited to see Minato already starting his jog! So he's going to run after him with his jolly bunny hops and Joonghyuk will follow along until they escort?
