Another Week Goes By

Monday morning comes along. It’s a quiet morning, which is much-needed after such a long island adventure. To anyone walking around the island, you’ll notice two things:

The airport is open, but the seaplane is gone.
Also, there’s a familiar face jogging around the perimeter of the housing portion of the island. That familiar face happens to be none other than the ninja rabbit himself, Snake! Looks like he’s already spending his first day on the island getting in shape!

When Tom Nook calls you all over for morning announcements, he looks pleased with himself. Even Snake comes over to join those who gather to listen to the tanuki. “Good morning, everyone! Let’s all give a warm welcome to our new friend, Snake!”

Cue applause. … Hopefully there is some applause, anyway. Snake grins and just looks very happy to be here.

“Next, I’m pleased to announce that the postal service is now open, since Orville is here to manage mail! You’re able to send individual messages to your fellow residents with gifts attached if you'd like, all handwritten if you’d like, yes. Alternatively, you can redeem what are called Nook Miles for items now -- they’re essentially a rewards system, and you can track your rewards on the Nook Miles app on your phone.”

“Essentially, the app will automatically award you for every contribution you add to the island, whether it be decorating your house, harvesting fruit, pulling weeds -- you name it! You can then turn in those Nook Miles at the airport, and that’s how we’ll be delivering items to you in the mail from now on.”

That’ll have the mail system make more sense, at least! Now it’s all on you if you decide to end up with 40 items in the mail all at once.

“The last announcement I have to make is that we’re going to make a second housing plot! The first one was a success, what with Snake moving in, and I’m grateful for Wilbur and Orville’s efforts in helping us build our island. So...with that, I need the following items for the next house:

1 Ironwood Table
2 Ironwood Dressers
1 Ironwood Clock
2 Ironwood Chairs

And just like last week, if nobody on the island has the DIY for these, I will send over the DIYs to your apps.”

He pauses, and then he looks a little...sheepish at this next announcement. “Now, I’m aware that some of you have been building bridges — and now that you all have vaulting poles and ladders, there are untouched parts of the island for you to explore. I’d like to ask you all to consider creating areas outside, such as an exercise area, perhaps even a park of sorts — though we will have someone coming in soon who may need some space.

Finally, this is just a request -- if you have any fossils, bugs, or fish, do turn them in to Blathers! He's very close to hitting his goal before we can open up a museum, so keep that in mind.”

He raises his hand, as if to end the morning announcements. “That’s all for today!”

Possible Objectives

1. Help Tom Nook prepare a housing plot for the second villager house!
2. Get Nook Miles to redeem items at the post office at the airport.
3. Help Blathers by catching and donating specimens.
4. Decorate and explore the untouched part of the island (see locations page; it’s the left hand area)

NOTE: Nook Miles are not a new mechanic and are simply an IC way to justify the rewards system, now! You don't need to keep track of points; just assume the threads you turn in are characters redeeming points for items.

[ If he ever bothers to dig up his own fossils, he's going to leave two unidentified in their spiral state to stick on either side of the skull like horns, so it can be like him. ]

Clay for a statue. Since I couldn't manage to make a dent in that cliff we found up north.

I see.

[ With that, Laurent digs into his pocket and pulls out ten pieces of clay to give to Minato. ]

[ He's a material farmer... ]

[ He has to put the skull away to free up his hands for the clay, accepting them gratefully and also stowing it all away in his pocket so his hands don't get that damp, tacky feeling of handling clay all day. ]

Thanks. Both you and Serval have been really helpful gathering up the materials for it, and I'm feeling pretty confident about this.

[ And, in repayment, he digs into his pocket and pulls out a gold nugget, holding it out for Laurent to take. ]

If anybody asks, you didn't get this from me.

[ He laughs a little and pockets the gold nugget. Imagine getting gold over pieces of clay... ]

Sure thing. I'll hand you any other extra clay if I come across them. I've been making a lot of DIY items lately, and surprisingly, they don't use clay much.

[ Clay is infinitely more useful. What's anybody supposed to do with a large hunk of gold? Soft worthless thing. ]

I'd appreciate that. Both the statue and the ocarina uses clay, so I find myself using a lot. ...Do you want an ocarina?

[ Does he? He has an ocarina DIY himself and can make an infinite number with the amount of clay he keeps picking up in the future, but he hasn't, since he doesn't know how to play one. He lets out a thoughtful hum.

... Wait. ]

How many ocarinas are you making for you to use a lot of clay other than the statue?

[ Minato's of the opinion that anybody can play the ocarina. You just sort of make noise with it, and anything sounds pretty. ]

I've only made two. Most of it's going towards the statue...

[ He's glad Minato has priorities. ]

Well, since you need clay for the statue, making an ocarina for me probably wouldn't be a good use of resources.

[ Laurent also gets out a shovel. However, this isn't a flimsy one. It looks like an actual durable shovel. ]

Since you're going to be hitting rocks, this might be more useful to you.

[ He sure has a lot of things in his pockets to give. ]

[ Uh- Okay. He take this shovel with a nod of thanks, and gives Laurent his flimsy on in return, because he is all about gifting junk today. ]

Thanks... And maybe it's not a good use of resource, but I'll still make one. If you want it.

[ A statue is not a good use of resources and he's still making it, that doesn't matter to him ]

I'm always carrying music around with me, so I sorta thought it'd be nice for others too.

[ You know what... Laurent will get out his mini DIY workbench and recraft the flimsy shovel Minato just gave him into a more durable shovel. All it takes is an iron nugget. ]

Does music hold a special place in your heart?

[ He asks while making the finishing touches on the Shovel. ]

[ What... Minato starts handing over all his other flimsy starter tools one by one regardless of whether Laurent is capable of upgrading them. Apparently Minato has the DIY for the net, sling shot, shovel, axe, and fishing rod and can provide these too, he just never bothered upgrading anything and uses his re-re-re-re-re-re-re-patched axe for everything. ]

Music is... I dunno. Special in general. I always had headphones on, and I took violin lessons, so I guess it's just something that's been a part of me since before- ...everything.

[ Boy... Laurent upgrades one more flimsy shovel and leaves it at that because no matter how much material farming he does, he will never have enough iron nuggets. He hands the upgraded shovels to Minato along with the rest of the flimsy tools he tried to pass onto him. ]

It's one thing to appreciate music by listening it, but when you play music, do you feel like you can express yourself better?

Uh... No.

[ That's the long and short of it. ]

Expression is... it's in the context of other people. But I play music written by others, and mostly for myself, so...

[ He shakes his head, stowing the last of his tools back into his interdimensional pocket. Music is such a private thing, usually, so even if his strange predilection for Engrish rap gives people a taste of what he likes, it doesn't really speak much to what he's like, in his opinion. ]

Why?

Music has varying meanings for everyone, and I was wondering what it meant for you. Even if it's written by someone else, you can still play it in your own way.

[ Covers exist and such. ]

I guess... It creates an internal world. That's very easy to get lost in.

He remembers when he'd always have his headphones on and blaring, a clear sign to anybody around him that he's not to be disturbed, but then he started wearing them less and less- until he's at this point where he often doesn't even miss the familiar weight of them resting over his chest. ]

Either music or thoughts. Something's gotta occupy your mind.

If it's either or, I'd pick music any day.

[ Though, it's nice, getting to know Minato a little more like this. ]

It's too bad there aren't any music players here other than the radio. We just have to make it ourselves.

[ touches the ground, Minato will never get his music player back bc I'm a fool who forgot to include it in his regains, RIP Minato. But it's okay!! and he thinks so too, because- ]

Yeah, but that's not too bad. Kaede plays the piano, and sitting next to her and listening to her play makes me pretty happy. Serval seems to be having a lot of fun with her frying pan. And Sylvando has his recorder and is just great to be around in general. I think I'd rather have this than a music player.

[ Minato has people he's fond of! It's like he's making new friends! When Minato says all that, Laurent smiles and ruffles his hair. It's also nice to see him having a constant drive of motivation compared to when Laurent first saw him. ]

Doing things together with people gives a different kind of experience than doing it alone.

[ Become a door for humanity, Minato. ]

Just as there are always things to learn from others.

[ Oof, Minato ducks his head slightly at the hair ruff but doesn't pull away.

Gestures at everybody here, how can you not be fond? However hard he tries to be distant, it's impossible not to grow fond of people, even if you end up blowing their brains out and locking yourself in the bad end path in the end. It's all done out of love. ]

Yeah... I'm going to learn how to juggle knives and swallow fire. Hopefully.

[ Laurent was about to suggest that Minato shouldn't, but he remembers something-- ]

... Are you learning that from Sylvando?

I want to.

[ What if Minato's life aspirations is becoming a clown? ]

[ Follow your dreams, Minato...

And. Well. Laurent believes Sylvando is a good guy, so if Minato wants to learn that sort of thing, Sylvando would be the best choice on this island that he knows of. Sylvando told Laurent that he was a professional entertainer, after all, and there was no reason to lie about it. ]

If you need instant fire, I have a container full of gasoline. Let me know when you start learning.

[ ... ]

You also can't tell anyone that I have it.

[ Sylvando is the best and Minato would be in no safer hands- in the exact same way that there would be no more dangerous hands than Minato's to have on that gasoline. ]

I promise I won't tell. But also... that would've made setting the statue on fire so much easier...

[ Laurent is very picky about giving that gasoline, especially ever since seeing Alexis's brazen network announcement. ]

Is that how clay statues work?

[ Setting them on fire with gasoline?? He feels like the clay would just melt or something. ]

[ He should be pickier about giving it to Minato, then, who might be in danger of setting himself on fire more than somebody's house. Hopefully Sylvando is a good a superviser as Laurent is. ]

I mean... you have to bake it, right? I tried with a camp fire, but it didn't work evenly.

[ So yeah, it melted. A trial run with a microwave had it exploding. He's still not deterred, though. ]
