The Move-In

You’ve spent the week adjusting to island life by getting to know one another, figuring out what to do with all those presents, gathering your resources and selling them off to Tom Nook. The weekend is finally here, though, and that’s something to celebrate!

...But when you wake up on Saturday, whenever that may be, the environment you’re in is not the tent you remember falling asleep in. Rather, you’re inside of some kind of house with a white wall and ceiling, wood lined across the bottom of the walls. The floor is wood, too, shiny and glossy as the sun rays shine through the one window in your house. Whatever you had lying out in your tents is still arranged in the same general order you had your things in before. Furthermore, you’re still lying on your camping cots with the same people who fell asleep in the tent with you, but if you decide to get up and investigate, you’ll find two other rooms other than the one you’re in.

Facing the door from the inside, if you look to your left, you’ll find...a bathroom! It’s got a basic toilet, sink, and a bathtub with a showerhead for you to use. There are also enough bath towels for each person hanging on a towel rack. The walls are white but the floor in here is tiled instead of wooden. The room across the bathroom, however, is empty. It has the same wallpaper and flooring as the main room you found yourself in.

It’s a small, comfy place you’re staying in, but the real question is… When did this happen? Only one way to find out.

And sure enough, if you’re awake by nine AM, Tom Nook will rally everyone to Resident Services for his morning announcements.

“Good morning, everyone, and welcome to your first weekend on Isle Sonrisa! As you’ve all probably already noticed by now, we were able to upgrade your tents last night into houses! Don’t worry, there is no fee for this upgrade -- but now you finally have a place where you can decorate your house with all the furniture you were able to get in the mail. For any excess items you may have… Might I suggest a yard sard of some sort, hm?”

He tilts his head a little. He thinks this is a good idea!

“Alternatively, houses all come with storage. There’s a small little storage shed in the back of everyone’s houses that can fit many, many items. If you don’t want to sell your items to me or hand them off to someone else, you can store them inside of there.”

Tom Nook nods his head. “Yes, yes. I’d like to suggest that you all take this weekend to decide how to arrange the items you’ve gotten in the mail...and one more thing about those items: You can put them outside, too. For example, oh, an exercise area might be nice…” He sounds a little wistful when he says it, but promptly shakes his head afterwards.

“Ah-! Before I forget...erm… It seems as though one of our friends has unexpectedly left the island. We don’t know where or how he left, you see...but Heimdall is no longer here. We’re still working on figuring out a way to send you all home, and we’re trying to track him down, too.”

He looks very guilty about that, at least. But the moment passes, and he perks up again, smiling at everyone as best as he can. “Alright, that’s it! You can spend the weekend however you’d like to, but with your new homes being built and all the furniture some of you have received, well… It may be a good idea to work on that, no?”

[Serval jumps down from a branch and lifts the tree off of him. How is she that strong?]

Are you okay?!

[Well, probably the same way he's just groaning in pain as he stands up instead of being jelly.]

It'll take more... than that... to take down the Dread Bird of Alrest!

[Serval tosses the tree to the side and worries.]

Do you need to sleep? That always makes me feel better in the daytime.

This Zekeinator isn't big on naps. And you still have to explain 3000 bells!

Minato-san was worried that the plane wouldn't work and thought there'd be something in the airport, so he told me to break down the door and I did! But there wasn't anything, and I felt bad for wrecking the door, so I made Tom Nook-san a new one. He said the airport was closed for repairs now, and now I owe him money to fix it. ...I think I made a mistake.

Oh, Minato's tricking you into using your strength for ill, is he? Well, I'll have a word with him. In the meantime... [Zeke sighs, slumping slightly.] It isn't fair to put all the blame on you. Tell you what, help me gather some apples and I'll get the money for you.

Really? Thanks a lot! That's really nice of you! Don't yell too much at Minato-san, though. I'm sure he was just worried.

We tentmates have to look out for each other! Or housemates, I guess it is now. Though we need to expand the thing to make it really livable.

Really? How big do you think it's supposed to be?

Well, there's only three rooms, and they're all connected. Either someone gets no privacy or you girls have to share a bunk, and that's not fair. So we need good bedrooms for each of us, a nice kitchen, a place to eat, someplace large in case we want to have friends over, and -- well, I don't know what you and Milla want in a house, but whatever those are!

Okay! I usually sleep in trees, so I don't really know what I want in a house. But I got some recipes on that phone thingy!

Hang on, trees? Why?

Because I'm a serval? [headscratch] Though when Kaban-chan and I were travelling, we slept in the bus.

But aren't you also a girl?

Yeah. [blink] Is this about how humans live in houses? At least someone here said they do. Most Friends just do what they did as animals.

[Uh.]

Hold on there, Serval, you've lost me. What's this about Friends and animals?

Friends, people like me, all used to be animals! Or things that used to be animals, like bones or hair. When something like that is touched by Sandstar, then a Friend is born! So I was a normal serval once, but I can't really remember that. It was a long time ago.

Really. How long ago is a long time ago?

I'm not sure! I've never counted. Do you usually count how old you are? I know some people here know.

That's pretty common for us. We celebrate birthdays and all, plus there's different things you can only do when you're older.

Oh, okay! We don't really get older anymore once we've become Friends, so I guess nobody thought it was important. I wonder if a Friend who's a human would age?

[Kind of sounds like a Blade, actually. Huh.]

So, you don't have any powers, then? Aside from being jolly strong, of course.

I can also jump pretty high and far! Though since I got here, I haven't been as good at it. I don't get it. What about the stuff you're good at?

I'm a Driver, without a Blade. So aside from just being the incredible guy that I am, I can't do everything that requires a Blade to do. But since we don't need to fight here... [Zeke shrugs.]

That's great, isn't it? No monsters and nothing bad! I haven't seen any Ceruleans at all.
