A New Week

It’s the week of the event, and now’s your chance for any last-minute preparations! The entertainment area is coming along just fine with the new chairs and decorations and the lineup of musicians ready to put on a concert for everyone. A concert is the perfect way to get someone like K.K. Slider’s attention, surely! Furthermore, with a library underway, the bottom left hand area of the island is coming along nicely.

Tom Nook’s announcements are all about the event, too. You have a big weekend coming up, after all!

“Hello, everyone! Thank you all for your hard work with the event these past few weeks. We’re not done yet, but I’ve gone ahead and copied all of the flyers. Orville is helping me mail them all out to residents all over, so we’ll hopefully have a great turnout to the Isle Sonrisa concert this weekend! Now…

“For more preparations, I’d urge you to consider food for the event as well. Perhaps today may be too early to start preparing anything, but as K.K. Slider will be here on the 15th, maybe Friday evening would be a good time to do so. Oh-! Speaking of food…”

Tom Nook will turn towards Ren with a smile on his face. “I went ahead and added a few little bits to Cafe Leblanc. I thought it might be a popular spot this weekend, so I went ahead and added more tables and chairs for people and added some wooden plank flooring for you! Yes, yes -- er, if you’d rather me take away these changes, I can do so, but I hope you do enjoy them.”

Then, he’ll turn back towards the rest of the group: “Ah, the only other thing I have for you is a little Q&A for our island residents! I thought that our visitors would enjoy getting to know those responsible for putting on such a fantastic event and creating such a nice island. Normally I’d ask you to write it on a piece of paper, but… I thought it’d be fun to do this over messaging so you can all learn more about one another, too! Assuming you all don’t know enough about one another already… Of course, if you’d rather it be private, then you can submit it to me personally in writing.

“I’ve sent the questionnaire to each of you in a group chat. Please give me your answers as soon as possible.”

The questionnaire is as follows:

For anyone checking the bulletin board, there are a couple of requests, just like when Snake asked you all for items! One is from Raymond:

As much as I love soaking in the nature of this beautiful island, I’m missing something in my own home... office supplies. Can you guys do me a favor? I really need some things that give my home a more office-y feel. A guy has to surround himself with things he feels comfortable with, you know?

I don’t like to think of myself as too picky, so anything that would be at home in an office is good for me. Printers! Plants! Fax machines! Coffee makers! The sky is the limit... I think.

Hey, island friends! It’s Audie! I’m a fashionable gal, and I could really use some spiffy new items to totes bring some excitement to my wardrobe! And my home! Dresses, hats, bags, socks and shoes, and furniture... whatever it is, if you think it’s stylish, I TOTALLY would love to take it off your hands! Just make sure it’s fun and fashionable, okay?

[Just north of the Entertainment District, you'll find a new building today! Inside, Serval has set up a reading couch and cushion, an umbrella stand so you don't track water around if it's raining outside, walls and floors that miraculously actually match, and shelves full of... oh, wait. There are two books in the fiction section (Ashe's regain and Minato's handmade book about the alligator and bird), and The Power of Positivity: A Ruler's Handbook and one book crudely made of stationery in the nonfiction section.

How does a girl who just learned to read open a library? Very enthusiastically, apparently.

You can find her curled up on the couch or struggling to read one of the books, and either way, she'll wave at you.]

Welcome to the library! We kinda need more books, but I'm sure we'll find some.

[ Laurent was wandering through the place today and surprisingly found this library building. Huh... he looks surprised and walks in to find Serval on the couch.

Oh, wait... he thinks she's sleeping, so he takes out a blanket from his pocket to put it over her and quietly says: ]

[Serval sleepily blinks, yawns, and tilts her head up.]

Morning, Laurent-san... Is it good? The library back home had a lot more books, even if most of us can't read them.

Yeah.

[ Laurent sits at the edge of the sofa and lightly pats her head. Shh, it's okay to rest. ]

It's a good start. I can fill it with more stories if I can, just not in book form.

You can't write books? I wrote mine on all the letter paper.

[She blinks, but doesn't sit up.]

I can write them. I meant putting it as a book.

[ He thinks about what kids used to do, folding papers in halves and stapling where the book spine should be. He might have to resort to doing that. ]

But I think I can make something like that as long as people will be careful when reading them.

Okay! Then we can have more books and the library won't look so empty. That sounds great! I wonder if Tom Nook-san knows how to get any more books. There were tons in the library back home, though not many people knew how to read them.

[ A library full of books, with not many people to read them. Hm... ]

So who was the library for? Back where you came from. Humans?

I don't know! It's just been there for a really long time. The Professor and her assistant take care of it, and whenever somebody needs to know something, they tell them. Sometimes they make a deal for it. I know Kaban-chan had to cook for them out of this "cookbook" thing they had in exchange for them telling her what animal she was, since they knew she was a human and humans could read and cook.

Huh... that's an interesting trade.

[ Though since she did note about humans, he supposes there's at least some use for the library. ]

Actually, Serval. I came looking for you. Are you still tired though?

It's okay! I can get up. [She sits up and rubs her eyes.] What do you need help with?

[ Instead of answering verbally, Laurent gets out a fishing rod with one of the rings from the ringtoss attached at the end like bait.

Then he dangles it in the air, and then tosses it to the ground, making it move a little. It's basically a bigger cat toy. ]

[Serval watches the ring with fascination and immediately pounces for it.]

Oh, it's a new game! That looks fun!

[ Joonghyuk is here to visit the library!! His eyes are bright with curiosity and interest, scanning the new facility. The book shelves being empty is disappointing, but it's not like there's an easy way to get more right now.

To think she recently learned how to read and write. He's impressed by her dedication. ]

[ And he'll offer another "book" made of paper, bound using dried bamboo. It's thin... A picture book about a wolf and a fox based on Laurent's gift to him. ]

Wow, thanks! [She takes the book and looks it over.] This looks really good. Did you make it, Joonghyuk-san?

... I helped. [ So no, he didn’t quite make it? Or he’s pretending he didn’t make most of it. Not the credit he wants. ] Someone else wrote it.

Okay! I'll put this in the library, too. Sorry we don't have a lot of books yet.

That's fine. Libraries grow over time.

Are we expected to read books here? Or are we able to rent and read them elsewhere, then return them.

Hmm... I dunno! I guess nothing's stopping you from borrowing them if you want to. That seems like the best thing for everyone.

[ Joonghyuk nods. He supposes he'll borrow one later, but... Again he's curious about Serval's progress. ]

Have you considered doing a reading for others?

Like reading things aloud?

Yes. It's not uncommon in my world.

[ How should he put it? ]

It's not too different from storytelling, but reading it rather than speaking from memory.

Oh, that sounds fun! Maybe we should do that at a party.

If that's what you want to do, I don't see why not. It would be good practice.
