The Meteor Shower

On Monday, there are, in your mailboxes, passports for those who happened to not pick them up when the airport opened. Hold onto these--they’re important, after all! Open them up, and you’ll find not only a title, your name, and your hometown, but you’ll also find…

A blank page? That’s right. There’s a page in the back of the admittedly small passport with only one thing on it: a space that looks like it has room for a star stamp. Huh. That’s strange, isn’t it? There are no hints as to what it could be about, but maybe the announcement will shed some light.

There’s also, like last week, a familiar face around the island… it’s Audie! Come around to her house to say hi--she’s very excited to be here, and very fashionably dressed as she strolls around the island.

And like clockwork, at nine AM, Tom Nook makes his announcement once more:

“Good morning, Isla Sonrisa! A few things this morning. Please give a warm welcome to our new neighbor, Audie!”

Audie smiles and waves at you all with both paws--she’s pretty flattered at the warm response. Tom Nook continues--

“We have for you the ability to build bridges now! Yes, yes, these will prove very useful indeed. Of course, you will most likely have to work together to figure out the best places to put these bridges, as we have only a limited number… But I am sure working together will be little trouble for you all! The only thing to note is that each bridge will come with a construction fee of 15,000 bells each. Consider working together to get some bridges up and running...?”

He pauses, and the next part comes with some measure of almost… not quite dismay, but there’s a certain cloud over the tanuki: “It also seems Iori and Mira have also left the island… Again, we’re looking into it, and should any discoveries come to light, I will tell you immediately.”

He nods to himself, and continues on--

“Next, I’d like to tell you all we have a very special event tonight… a meteor shower! Yes, yes, starting at 7 PM, we will have clear skies and many stars to wish upon. Who knows--maybe your wishes will all come true!” He says that with a bright smile, almost like he really believes it… Or maybe that’s just his quiet optimism? Anyway, he continues--

“Finally, I’d like to thank you all for your hard work in making items for our new friends! Yes, yes, you all have been working so hard to create furniture and items for our housing plots, but this week, I invite you all to put your best DIY skills to the test! There are no specific style requirements in mind, but please make sure our potential new friend has:

1 Table
2 Dressers
1 Clock
2 Chairs

Of course, if you’d like to make more, I am sure our friend will not be opposed…” He pauses, and seems to remember something! “Ah, yes, we are very close to opening our museum… I am sure Blathers would appreciate any bugs, fish, or fossils regardless! Hmm… Yes, that is all I have for you! Thank you once more for your hard work, and have a wonderful day!”

Possible Objectives

1. Help Tom Nook prepare a housing plot for the last villager house.
2. Donate more specimens to Blathers.
3. Attend the meteor shower, if you so desire. There may be some secrets waiting for you...
4. Make a money pool for some bridges.

Uh-huh. Minato-san's even gloomier than usual, since Iori-chan and Mira-chan are gone. So I wished for something that'll make him happy! Like a new food, since he got sick of apples. What about you?

... Yeah, he'd be pretty sad about them, wouldn't he?

[ He makes note to find Minato later. ]

I wished that my uncle would live a good, healthy life. It's the least I can do for him from here.

You're always looking out for people, huh? That's why you're a nice person.

Well, that's...

[ Laurent's voice trails off. He wants to mention that maybe he only does that to people he actually cares about, but he decides that Serval doesn't really need that sort of thing. ]

... he's family, after all. It's expected for humans, at least.

It's the nature of anyone, isn't it? I don't really have a family, I don't think, but Friends look out for each other. I think that's why we're called Friends.

Hm, would you call them something like your found family instead? Or do you like being friends better?

I don't know. What's a family like, do you think? I don't think I had one even when I was a normal animal. Servals don't really stay together.

Sometimes, a family can be a group of people who care about each other a lot. That level of caring can be more than friendships.

Of course, a family can also be two parents and their children. But the one I said first as an example is more like a found family instead of a family by blood.

That sounds nice! I wonder if we're all family here yet. I care about all of you.

[ Laurent wanted to ask whether that's more than as friends, but he's not sure if she would understand. He tries to think of a way to explain it better... but in the end, he thinks that it's rather sweet. And his thinking capacity has run its course since it's so late at night. ]

That's sweet of you, Serval. I personally wouldn't mind having a found family here.

[ Hm. ]

Do you know how to make shadow puppets?

What are those? It sounds fun.

You make shapes with your hands. Watch.

[ Laurent sets his lantern down and with the light that's coming from it, he makes a basic dog hand puppet shadow on the tree trunk. ]

This one is a dog.

[ And he mimics a soft, barking sound. ]

Amazing!

[It's dark out, but Serval is practically sparkling. She clumsily copies the motion.]

This, right?

You're so close. Just do this here and you're good to go.

[ After instructing her, Laurent makes his hand puppet open its mouth to imitate barking again. ]

[Serval still isn't as dextrous as the average human, but she gets it better this time.]

This is fun! There are other things you can make, right?

[ It's okay, Serval. You learn new things every day! Laurent gets both hands and makes a simple butterfly-like shadow. ]

This one is a butterfly. You can flap their wings like this.

[ And he shows that by moving his hands. ]

[Serval giggles and copies the motion.]

People must do this a lot if they live where it's dark! Right?

If they feel bored enough, yeah.

[ Laurent makes his hand butterfly shadow follow Serval's. ]

Look, they're friends now.

[Her eyes widen and she claps gleefully. Next, she tries her usual paw motion in front of the light.]

I wonder what this is. A snake?

It can be a snake. It can even be a bird. It reminds me of a swan.

[ Vicious things. ]

Oh, that works too! I don't know any swans, but they live in the Waterfront Area. Maybe I should go back there sometime! It was fun.

Are they friendly? I know they're known for being elegant, but...

[ Maybe it's different for Serval? ]

Maybe! They look friendly, but I don't know any. But the other people I met there were fun!

Were they flamingos?

[ ... ]

Or geese?

There were all kinds of Friends gathered there! But the people we got to talk to were Margay, who's another kind of wildcat like me, and the members of PPP. They're all different types of penguins, and they formed this thing called an idol unit! It's really popular.
