Saturday

Before Tom Nook does his morning announcements on Saturday, you might notice something different about one of the structures around you. Those of you who can hear well may listen to the curious sound of an engine running in the near distance. Walk towards the source of the sound, and you’ll see two things:

1) The airport door is fixed.
2) Someone is inside the seaplane.

Should you enter the airport, you’ll find… a dodo sitting at the desk. Huh. You haven’t seen this particular bird here yet… Regardless, when he notices you all, he perks up and looks downright excited.

“Hey, hey, hey! Welcome to your one and only gateway to the skies, the Isla Sonrisa Airport! Wow, there are a lot of you! I’m Orville, and I’ll be taking care of your flight arrangements. Hey, Wilbur, get out here and meet these fellas!”

And another dodo comes out from the back of the airport--or, rather, where you’d expect the plane is docked. He seems a little more serious than the other dodo, but he gives a wave all the same, looking at you through his shades.

“You all are the ones we’re taking to the mystery island, right? Nice to meet you. I’m Wilbur. We’ll give you more details tomorrow. We’re still setting up here.”

Wilbur and Orville, the dodos in charge of the airport… try not to think about it too hard. Anyway, the dodos are here to help you out… by taking you to a “mystery island,” it seems.

Before you head out to board the plane, Orville gathers you all into the lobby of the airport. He has an explanation!

"Now, you've gotta be wondering why we've called you all here. There's something special about this island you'll be spending the day at! There's someone who's looking for a change of pace, an island paradise home, and it's up to you to ask them if they'd like to stay! You guys helped prepare that housing plot, right? Can't leave it unoccupied for much longer after all that hard work! Board the plane and soar into the sky right to your potential new neighbor! ... Tomorrow!"

...Well, now that you know what you have to do, how will you prepare?

Sunday

On Sunday, before you take off on your mystery island tour, Tom Nook asks everyone to meet at Resident Services again. This time, though, it’s Blathers who has something for you. Remember those containers with the tools during your first week here? Those are back out, but this time, you’ve got two new things: Ladders and vaulting poles. You’ll also notice that your DIY Apps now have DIYs for both of these things! How convenient.

Now that you’re properly equipped to go on your mystery island tour, Wilbur and Orville will escort you onto the seaplane. They need to make two trips, as the max capacity of the plane cannot fit everyone inside; but should you choose to go to the island, you’ll find something very, very interesting. Wilbur is your pilot, and will also be around to assist you while you explore this mysterious island.

The island is populated with bamboo trees! Well, would you look at that! Here’s something you haven’t seen yet. The trees are tall and the leaves are gently swaying in the wind. Should you chop at these bamboo trees, you’ll get bamboo pieces or young spring bamboo. There are even bamboo shoots to be dug up—either for a snack or to plant back home.

There are two tiers to the island—a ground level and a little cliff that you can climb up onto. The island also has rocks for you to mine, trees for you to shake, and bugs and fish for you to catch if you need them. And, pleasantly surprising, there are coconut trees to harvest fruit from: eight of them, four on either shore, with two coconuts per tree. There are also plenty of shells to collect on the shore. What’s missing is that there are no balloons, DIY bottles, or fossils to be found here. All of this can be seen from the aerial view of the island.

There is one other thing that stands out, though: On the left hand side of the island near the beach is a campfire...along with some movement. You can’t quite discern who this may be, but it seems like you aren’t alone on the island after all.

Landing will allow you to do whatever you desire with this island. You aren’t coming back here, after all. Just be mindful of the other visitor who’s here. They may be up for a chat — but there’s only one way to find out.

Apparently those star rocks were fossils. The owl assessed them for me and they turned into these.

[ You can't just look at things and make things different!!! Though. That's how everything on this island works, and Minato looks back down at the fossil instead of thinking more about it.

The Brachiosaurus skull is literally over three feet long, so Minato just sort of has his arms wrapped around it I guess. There's no way he can swap out his skeleton skull with this one, or hang it on his front door without completely blocking the way. ]

[ That's a rather resigned look on Laurent's face. He gave up trying to input logic into anything in this world anymore. ]

Anyway, you can have that one. I'll keep the tail. What music were you talking about earlier?

What're you going to do with the tail?

[ He supposes it can still be a worthy centerpiece for the garden, and tries not to think too much about it as he shoves this monstrosity into his pocket before turning around to face the piano proper, so he can talk while playing, albeit with a slightly stilted voice in matching the beat of the music. It's Aria of the Soul. ]

Maybe make something like a Halloween outfit, but it's pretty fragile.

Anyway, Laurent listens to the song. It sounds relatively simple with a lot of chords. He takes note of the notes and the rhythm. ]

I feel like it could be a completed piece on its own with the piano from the way you play it, but I haven't heard the original.

The original's mainly vocal, with piano and string accompaniment. Something like...

[ And he sings, softly, voice not reaching the high pitch of the original but carrying the melody while the piano drops to the background to support the song. He only sings a fragment of it before stopping, though. ]

The room holds the music better than open air, too. High vaulted ceiling and everything.

[ To Laurent, that just felt more like a held note than actual singing, but it'll count as singing to someone, somewhere out there. ]

You also want to find a place with good acoustics?

[ How are they gonna find that on a deserted island??

He takes out his notepad and pen, and starts making a piano music score for the song. When he's done, he puts it on the score stand. ]

Do you want it exactly the same? Or something with a twist?

[ The note moves up and down and therefore it's singing, as far as Minato's concerned. ]

Somewhere with good acoustics, yeah. Like a really large shower. I have some of the music transcribed for piano and violin, but... I want it exactly the same. The same feeling it evokes. Maybe I can't achieve that without the singer.

I have a spare violin for string, though I don't play the violin.

Does anyone on the island even play violin?? A mystery. ]

Sonico plays guitar. Maybe she can pluck the strings and make it work.

[ There is no guitar in Aria of the Soul, but there are also 30498573 versions of the song and they should all do what he needs, maybe. ]

Please do not desecrate a musical instrument.

[ He knows it's technically possible.

I heard Sonico had a synthesizer. You can make electric guitar noises with it if done right.

Oh. Do you know how to do it right...? Does she? I'll have to ask her next time I see her.

[ We're getting further and further from the classical Aria, but Minato isn't adverse to trying it out. ]

[ If left alone with the synthesizer to try and figure things out, Laurent could play learn how to use it. He's actually counting on Sonico knowing how to use it, since it's hers now. ]

She seemed to have a lot of fun with it.

[ He overheard. ]

Actually, don't you know how to play the violin? Since you said you transcribed the piece for violin too.

Yeah. I've been playing for years, so I'm okay at it. Once you know how to make the notes, instruments in general are pretty easy...

[ Hence the piano, and the ocarina he's figured out in a week's time. ]

If I can get a band together, I'll just fill in the gaps wherever I'm needed.

[ Laurent's here thinking if Minato is some sort of musical prodigy with that way of thinking. Maybe it's a side thing from learning how to adapt. ]

What a flexible guy you are. Did you have anyone else in mind for your band?

[ You play around until the noises are passably musical. Instruments are easy. ]

If I can get you and Sonico for piano and guitar... then Kaede for piano too, and Sylvando for recorder. Iori for vocals. Serval for frying pan.

Two pianos?

[ Not that he minds, since he's seen Kaede play but-- ]

Did this song have some variation of percussion in it?

[ Frying pan??? ]

Figured there'd be disappointed people the island didn't get named that. But now, they can still be a part of it.

[ This is definitely going to be nothing like the original, so might as well go all out. ]

[ He's already got much more than the base necessities of vocals, piano, and violin, but the ad is already out there. And so, he subtly turns the wants around, as he tends to do. ]

If they want to play, I won't turn anybody away.

[ Cool. Laurent scribbles something on his notepad and folds it on the sign in a way that it sticks and doesn't fall off easily.
