Arrival

A full week has come and gone, and you may be left with more questions than answers. There’s no word on the progress of figuring out how to get all of you home just yet -- you only have the land, an abandoned sea plane, your new homes and a garden to get you through this upcoming week.

...So far, that is.

Come Monday at nine AM though, Tom Nook does his morning announcements once more. Seems like he has something new for you to work with:

“Good morning, Isle Sonrisa! Great news -- we now have a grocery store up and running for everyone! The grocery store is located right about House #5, and it has a wide selection of foods and ingredients for you to choose from. While we’re still mailing kitchen equipment over to all of you, food shouldn’t be a problem any longer. The grocery store will be run by my apprentices…Timmy and Tommy!

We also have tulips in stock, now! Red, white, and yellow are our only colors, but I've heard that sometimes watering them next to one another may give you new colors. Perhaps you can try that out yourselves, yes?”

He’s very happy about this announcement. He knows how much you all wanted your food, after all! Time to continue with the announcements, though:

“The only other thing I have for you this morning is very, very important. I know there are many of you here on the island already, but assuming that most of you will be going back home, we need to get more permanent residents on the island. Yes, yes. Permanent residents from this world who may be interested in experiencing life on an island!

What I’m asking all of you to do is to prepare housing plots for our new residents. I’ve already designated areas on the island for them, and as such, your Nook Phones now have a map app so you can see where the new land plots will be. Yes, yes. Now, to prepare the first housing plot… I need the following:

1 Log Dining Table
1 Log Extra-long Sofa
1 Log Decorative Shelves
1 Log Wall-mounted Clock

If none of you have a DIY for any item in particular, I’ll go ahead and send the DIY recipe for it to your phones. It will show up in all of your DIY apps.”

He smiles at everyone with his trademark tanuki grin.

“And that’s about all I have for you today! Good luck, everyone!”



Possible Objectives

1. Help Tom Nook prepare a housing plot for a potential new resident!
2. Stock up on food and cook for yourselves and your fellow residents.

...Tangentially, I've just started working on some medicines here, but if you're interested in being a volunteer for some early-stage testing, we can arrange for that. No guarantees, of course.

It was sometime after 7pm. I wasn't too close to the Residential service, closer to the grocery store and houses 4 and 5.

Well, it isn't as if I have anything to lose so it's worth a try.

[ I mean, what's the worst that can happen? Die? hahaha... wait. ]

[ Cool. He's not going to rush over, but give it an hour and he'll eventually show up to knock on the door. ]

[ It takes a few minutes, but Dokja does get to the door with a blanket bundled tightly around him and the image of.. well, being sick! He blinks a few until it seems to hit him as his thoughts slowly catch up. ]

Ah, hello. Are you here about the medicine?

[ All right, well. Rideaux wasn't actually sure who he'd been talking to or who else was going to be in this house, but clearly he's got the right person! He smiles. ]

That's right.

[ Holding up a little white bag of it...! ]

You didn't actually ask, but for the record, this is part of what I usually do for a living. [ So he's not some random quack from the internet or whatever. ] The ingredients and manufacturing methods I'm working with here are new to me, is all.

[regression]

[ Joonghyuk is somewhere in the back, wolf ears perked at the sign of a guest. Why would they have guests? In a couple of steps, he's also here... Scowling at Rideaux, instinctively suspicious.

His gaze shifts to Dokja because it must be his doing. ]

Who is this?

[afterword]

Right, that's normally something someone would ask. [ He laughs, sounding almost sheepish. Yes, normally he would've asked for more details, learn of his background before considering but he's.. a bit muddled from the sickness.

Well that's some relief. ] I see--

[ And of course Yoo Joonghyuk shows up. He's always hovering nearby, especially since technically Dokja should be spending the day in bed. ] Joonghyuk-ah, this is...

[ A hand holds up in Rideaux's direction and. Hm. He.. forgot to ask his name, didn't he? He looks expectantly in Rideaux's direction. help ]

[ Another smile that manages to look even less warm than the first one! ]

Rideaux. I'm a doctor. I heard about his illness and thought I'd come see what I could do to help. And you're...?

[ He heard the name, but it meant nothing to him, so. ]

[regression]

Yoo Joonghyuk.

[ That's it. He isn't going to give any title that doesn't matter here. ]

I'll sit in for the examination.

[ Yes, he decided this himself. No, There aren't any negotiations. ]

[afterword]

Kim Dokja.

[ Just slides in his own introduction, laughing a little. ]

Don't mind him, he's a little... protective. [ He side eyes Joonghyuk, but he waves it off as he regards Rideaux again. ] Would you like to come in? Or would you prefer we continue here. Whatever is easier.

[ He almost feels as if he's leaning in one direction so he props himself against the door's frame for now. ]

[ Ugh, this is why he doesn't usually allow for visitors. Well, whatever. ]

Right.

[ A slight shake of his head. ]

Inside, if you don't mind. It looks like continuing here would end up with you on the floor before too long.

[ The words have his eyebrows knitting some more. Joonghyuk doesn’t quite like what he hears, but he makes way and waits beside Dokja. The scrutinizing and piercing look stays pinned on their guest— ]

Shoes off.

[ A reminder. ]

[ If Yoo Joonghyuk's attitude didn't scare or make someone uncomfortable, it was definitely his stares. Be strong, doctor. ]

Please, come in.

[ Dokja looks bemused by it and shuffles back into the house so he can make his way to sitting on a nearby sitting area. Of course he weakly smacks Joonghyuk's arm as he passes. Wrapping the blanket around himself, he curiously adds. ] What kind of medications did you make back in your world-line? If you don't mind my asking.

[ God, he's from a JRPG, no one even takes off their shoes in bed!! But yes, fine, his snazzy two-tone shoes will stay by the door.

"World-line" is an interesting way of phrasing it, and a more fitting one than most would realize. Hm. Maybe he'll ask sometime if there was a particular reason for going with that over the simpler "world" everyone else here uses. ]

Mostly pain medicines for treating the side effects of the technology I specialize in, but I've also made some improvements to our standard formulas for other types of drugs -- antibiotics and so on. Granted, I'm not usually making those other types from scratch, but I've come up with some crude formulas in emergency situations that have worked well enough.

[ The shoes stay on in bed, I see. Joonghyuk cocks an eyebrow as he listens, rather interested in Rideaux's skills because everyone needs a healer or a drug dealer. One or the other.

He hasn't gotten a chance to read the network, but he can connect the dots and turns to Dokja— ]

You intend to be a guinea pig? [ Unhappy. ] You might become sicker than you are. Side effects can be unpredictable.

[ Dokja is aware of Jude having some medical experience, knowing even Yoo Joonghyuk here has some.. thinking of Lee Seolhwa. But as far as he's aware, Rideaux is the only one he's heard mention actually experimenting with medicines. He curiously takes in what the other man provides, ears twitching atop his head.

He's about to say something before Joonghuyk beats him to it. Yeah, he kinda expected his companion to have this kind of reaction. He would be a bit more wary himself but he's sick and you know what? He's willing. ] I would be more worried if he didn't seem like he knew what he was talking about. [ No offense. ] If it isn't me, it's likely someone else to be a guinea pig. Since I'm already sick anyways it's a good opportunity.

[ Yeah, let's not talk about Jude. ]

Precisely. You can hardly test for effectiveness on a healthy person, so this is a prime opportunity to prepare ourselves for the next time someone falls ill. Especially given our situation -- living in shared rooms in a place with no medical facilities or reliable transport -- we should take every precaution we can, don't you think?

[regression]

[ They're both right, but Joonghyuk can't help but be cautious. Despite his rational mind saying Dokja can follow through and the developments would help them all, the anxious part of him doesn't like it. ]

There should be reimbursement.

[ He crosses his arms. It's merely a suggestion that would put him at ease... In the end, he isn't stopping his companion and the doctor from continuing. ]

[afterword]

[ Dokja can see that Joonghyuk is aware of their reasoning, but he also doesn't blame his cautiousness. Were this the novel he knew down to every word, he might be more confident but the uncertainty is there.

And what he asks for isn't demanding too much. He looks to see what the doctor will say, especially since he hastily grabs a nearby tissue to sneeze into. Ugh. He's gonna lean back in his seat some more to relax don't mind him. ]

I think that should be fine.

If it works as intended, you'll have gotten free medical care out of it. That's a coveted thing for many, you know.

In the event that it doesn't, however, I'm willing to offer some bells as compensation.

[ Or a recipe for a butter churn. ]

[ ... Joonghyuk stays quiet because that's enough for him, likewise his glare softens. It doesn't mean he isn't still watching their guest, of course.

Consider him placated. ]

Sounds like we've come to an agreement then.

[ Joonghyuk isn't saying anything, and Dokja is fine with that so he'll go with it. Though he shifts where he sits with wrapping the blanket around him more as if cold. ]

Since this world-line works a bit differently, for example food and plantlife growing in three days time.. I'm wondering if I should expect some quick results?

[ There we go with world-lines again... ]

I'm curious about that as well. It sounds like this supposed cold of yours came on faster than one would normally expect, so it's plausible that every type of life here could be on a similarly accelerated life cycle.

[ He'll be getting up in Dokja's business for a moment to check for any symptoms of it being anything beyond a cold that could pose a problem -- checking his eyes, temperature, whatever. Doing his due diligence since this other guy is watching him so intensely!! ]

Where were you stung by that scorpion?
